Apple Bets Big On Beats 1 Radio Starting Tomorrow

2

Along With Its Music & Beats 1 Launch, Apple Will Also Release Its iOS 8.4.

HUTHE MOUTH, JUNE 29TH, 2015 –– Beginning tomorrow morning, all eyes and ears will be on Apple as the $750 billion dollar magnate launches it highly anticipated Beats 1 Radio along with its streaming service. Apple Music is set to launch at 11am ET/8am PT tomorrow alongside the release of iOS 8.4 One hour later at 12pm ET/9am PT, the inaugural Beats 1 radio broadcast will take place presented by DJ Zane Lowe.

2Billing itself as a first global radio station, it will be available in more than 100 countries with a lineup led by Zane Lowe (L), formerly of BBC Radio 1 in L.A., Hot 97 Ebro in New York, and Rinse FM DJ Julie Adenuga (R) in London. Other feature shows will be hosted by Dr. Dre, Elton John, Pharrell Williams, Josh Homme and Jaden Smith.

According to Yahoo, Beats 1 marks a revival of the human element in streaming radio by using a model of Songza, which allows real people to help select listeners' playlists. Writer Shaun Tandon notes that adult radio listeners still tune in to traditional AM/FM broadcasts 86 percent of the time, according to Nielsen figures. Cortney Harding, a consultant to music start-ups and a former editor at Billboard, said not to underestimate the appeal of traditional radio with its mix of local news, weather and event listings. "People still respond to that. So I think Beats 1 is going to do well, I think it's going to be interesting; I don't know that it's going to be that massive," she said.

Along with the announcement will be Apple launch of its iOS 8.4 with updates available starting June 30th at 8 AM PT. Reportedly, all of the users upgrading to iOS 8.4 will receive the Apple Music app incorporated in the operating system. PHOTO/Times Square Billboard - Lowe/Twitter

Racine's 92.1 The Lake Flips Again To 'The Shore'

THE MOUTH, JUNE 29TH, 2015 –– Lot of moving parts here, so just to recap: Just hours after Milwaukee flipped from pop-formatted 94.5 The Lake back to its iconic calls, WKTI and became 94.5 KTI Country, that format and label were scooped up by Racine's WMKQ as they became 92.1. That didn't sit well with WKTI's owner E.W. Scripps Co. with its Vice President of Radio Steve Wexler telling The Racine Journal Times that he was "surprised to see any appropriation of a slogan and logo like that."

2As Jockline first reported last week (6.24), Magnum's Dave Magnum said it was too early to announce a resolution but confirmed his company is still calling 92.1 FM “The Lake” and using the similar logo. He added, “There are developments, but I must respect the process and not discuss it until it’s appropriate to do so.” For now, both “The Lake” and logo remain in place.

Now, according to jsonline.com, Magnum announced to its staff this weekend that, beginning today (6.29) it will become 92.1 The Shore. This marks the third name change for the station in the past year. It was WEZY-FM. Then when Magnum acquired it they changed its name to WMKQ and began playing country, a switch that lasted six months before switching to The Lake.

SiriusXM Settles Royalty Dispute Over Pre-72 Songs

THE MOUTH, JUNE 29TH, 2015 –– Last Friday, one of the lawsuits involving royalties from pre-72 songs was settled when SiriusXM, announced it would pay $210 million to several major record companies over its broadcasting of songs made before that year. According to The New York Times, the settlement may open the door to millions of dollars in new royalty payments for older performers, who in many cases have not been paid from Internet and satellite radio.

“This is a great step forward for all music creators,” said Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, which coordinated the suit on behalf of Sony, Universal, Warner and Abkco, an independent that controls rights to early Rolling Stones songs. “Music has tremendous value,” Mr. Sherman added, “whether it was made in 1970 or 2015. Members of the Turtles have sued Sirius claiming they are owed royalties, but that case remains unresolved. The Turtles sued Sirius in three federal courts, saying that their songs before 1972 were still covered under state laws in New York, California and Florida although last week Sirius was granted summary judgment in the Florida case.

Suspect Arrested Again After Stalking MPR host

THE MOUTH, JUNE 26TH, 2015 –– Patrick Henry Kelly (below), who was charged in October with stalking Mary Lucia (L), host of MPR/Twin Cities' 89.3 Currents program, has been arrested again for allegedly leaving flowers and a manila envelope on Lucia's doorstep, which was caught on a surveillance2e camera.

According to twincities.com, the envelope contained a book and a letter signed "Patrick." Lucia had a surveillance system installed because of previous interactions with Kelly, and that system captured video of him coming to her door and leaving the items. Lucia called 911, and investigating officers noted she was "very fearful" and "filled with dread due to the defendant's actions," according to the complaint.

Kelly was first charged with stalking Lucia last October after first sending her unwanted gifts to the radio station in St. Paul and later bringing gifts and letters to her home in Minneapolis. After his initial court appearance, he posted bond and was released from jail on the condition that he have no contact with Lucia. Kelly is scheduled to go to trial on the stalking charges Aug. 31. FRED JACOBS: Non-Competes Being Redefined By The Internet

THE MOUTH, JUNE 26TH, 2015 –– The Death of Non-Competes?, is the title of a recent blog from media consultant and visionary Fred Jacobs. He writes: "It is fascinating that some of the weapons that radio management historically wielded are becoming obsolete." Among them, Non-Compete Agreements. "The ability to “disappear” a DJ or show has been usurped by fans who immediately start their protest Facebook pages,' he writes. "While this rarely results in a change of heart by management, it does make the ability to quietly change out talent far more difficult and precarious. Similarly, the “non-compete” may be taking that same route."

The once constraining non-compete which, in the past, kept a host or show 'out of sight or mind, is now, as Jacobs puts it, 'Is being disrupted by social media and digital tools that allow talent to stay very present.

'2Stephen Colbert is showing us how it’s done,' adds Jacobs. "Months before he sits behind the desk on CBS’s Late Show. The new show won’t debut until September 8, but as the New York Times reports, Colbert is all over the digital universe, test-driving his humor and keeping connected with his legions of fans, more than 8 million of whom follow him on Twitter.' Colbert’s YouTube video has already garnered more than 1.2 million views. Jacobs also refers to WRIF Detroit's hiring of Dave & Chuck the Freak (right - with Dave Hunter, Lisa Way and Charles Urquhart). "The non-compete clause in their contract with their former station loomed large. But with a base of more than 90,000 fans on Facebook, the team could easily communicate with listeners off the air," says Jacobs.

"The “non-compete” has been redefined. But more than that, how a personality spends that time “on the beach” is being reshaped as well. The opportunity to stay connected to the audience while trying out new routines and content ideas are becoming the norm. Once again the Internet is redefining how the game is playing, forcing both management and air personalities to adapt," says Jacobs. READ COMPLETE BLOG HERE

STEVE GOLDSTEIN: 32 Million Listened To A Podcast Last Week; Should We Still Call It Podcasting?

2THE MOUTH, JUNE 26TH, 2015 –– Ampilfi Media's Steve Goldstein, in his Blogstein posted that 32 million listened to a Podcast Last Week (ed. note: nearly 1 million downloaded Marc Maron's podcast with President Obama).

Goldstein asks: "Should we call it podcasting? It's really not a great name. He then links a recent Edison Media report on the state of podcasting which shows that in 2006 only 22% had heard the term. Now, it's at the 50% mark. "It has some ubiquity. Not sure "on-demand" is a better "handle," Goldstein adds. 46 million Americans (17% of the population) listen to podcasts monthly,' he continues. 'While it is not truly an apples-to-apples comparison, but worthy of mention, Sirius/XM has 27 million subscribers. 50% of podcasts are listened to by people 12-34 versus the U.S. population at 36%. This follows the on-demand arch of television which skews younger as well. On a weekly basis, podcasting reaches 10% of the U.S. Population. That's 32 million. Way beyond "hobby" level. Not surprisingly, podcasting is a mobile experience. Which does not necessarily mean listening occurs out of the home, but rather occurs via smartphone. The phone is where the content lives which has major implications for the trajectory of the in-car experience as tethering becomes easier for consumers,' writes Goldstein. See complete post HERE
