[LISTEN] Was Radio's Scott Shannon The Inspiration For WKRP's PD Andy Travis?

7

THE MOUTH, JANUARTY 18TH, 2018 –– Following yesterday's news of the passing TV's WKRP in Cincinnati Creator, Hugh Wilson (below) came a bevy of emails including an audio clip from yesterday's Scott Shannon Show on Entercom's CBS-FM New York. Shannon remembered Wilson from his days as a 'baby dj' at 790/WQXI Atlanta and said that he was often reluctant to suggests any connection to the show until an interview with Wilson on Erik Nagel's (BL) Show on SiriusXM surfaced, which made 7clear that 'QXI was not only the inspiration behind the series, but that Shannon was the muse for the Andy Travis PD character, played by Gary Sandy (shown above in plaid blue & white shirt).

Scott recalled that Wilson would come by and sit in the lobby to watch the DJs through the soundproof glass and could be seen taking notes on the different happenings which would later become the hit TV series WKRP In Cincinnati. “My boss was the same guy that was on that TV show,” says Shannon. Scott also remembers all of the other colorful characters from his office who made it to the show — although the receptionist at Scott's office sort of resembled Loni Anderson (bottom left), she was quite a bit older than the star. Scott said he finds it funny when he tells people that the character was patterned after him and they think he’s full of it.

“He’s a wonderful guy and he’s had a huge impact,” Wilson told Nagel. “He’s one of the reasons maybe if you’ve ever wondered what’s become of me — it’s because I knew how guys like Scott just kept moving, and moving, and moving. Talk about rolling stones!”

Among other emails we received yesterday included one from the 'king of all radio trivia' Art Vuolo who told us, "What most people didn't know is that Wilson never checked to see if there was a WKRP in the Queen City...and there wasn't but there is a talk station 550 WKRC (iHeart Media). It was widely reported that mail that was addressed simply to: WKRP in Cincinnati was actually delivered to WKRC! Oddly enough there WAS a station with the WKRP call-letters in Dallas, GA...not Texas. However, those calls are no longer on in the small Georgia town. LISTEN TO SHANNON PIECE HERE

Creator Of ‘WKRP In Cincinnati’ Hugh Wilson Has Passed Away At 74

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 17TH, 2018 –– The creator of the classic sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati” Hugh Wilson has died, according to CBS19 in Charlottesville, VA. He was 74. The 7show was inspired by 70's Atlanta top 40 station 790/WQXI-AM. Wilson was formerly an Atlanta ad sales guy and used stories he heard about the station and the characters he met there to create the show, which ran on CBS from 1978 to 1982.

“They stuck with us and we stumbled through four years,” Wilson said in a 2015 interview to the Archive of American Television. It actually did far better in syndication in the 1980s. According the AJC's Rodney Ho, Willson joined the Burton-Campbell ad agency in Atlanta and proceeded to disgrace himself. “I started out as an assistant account executive, and that didn’t work out,” he recalled. “I was with company president Jack Burton one day and fell asleep in the client’s office. They were going to have to get rid of me as an account executive. I was just useless.” What saved him was that he started writing advertising copy for the firm and showed a talent for it.

In 1976 Wilson went to Los Angeles on vacation and stayed at the home of his old friend Jay Tarses writes Ho, who was a comedy writer for the MTM Studios, home of shows such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and, later, “Hill Street Blues.” He quit advertising and jumped into TV writing, eventually creating “WKRP in Cincinnati.” Ho writes that several characters on the show were based on actual people. Dr. Johnny Fever, played by Howard Hessemen, was based in part on “Skinny” Bobby Harper of WQXI. “Big Guy” Arthur Carlson, the bumbling general manager played by Gordon Jump, was based on Jerry Blum, the WQXI general manager. Fashion-challenged Herb Tarleck (Frank Bonner) was a stand-in for long-time Atlanta radio executive Clarke Brown. Wilson Photo/Jen Fariello
