END OF AN ERA: Cleveland's John Lanigan Announces Retirement THE MOUTH, JANUARY 27TH, 2014 –– One of Cleveland's most dominant morning host of all time, John Lanigan (L), announced he'll be retiring on March 29th. Following his nearly 29 yr. run at WMJI FM/105.7, he tells cleveland.com, "It's been a long time coming .. "I've been doing it for a long time and I'm 71 and I've been thinking about it for a while." "We can't thank John enough for his dedication and performance over the years," says WMJI operations manager Keith Abrams. "We will continue to have a relationship with John moving forward, but it won't involve him getting up at 4 a.m." Lanigan broke the news on Friday by calling into "The Lanigan and Malone (R) Show," which he hosts with Jimmy Malone. Lanigan began his first radio stint in Cleveland in 1970 as morning host at WGAR AM/1220, where he replaced Don Imus. He left briefly in 1983 for a Florida station, but returned in 1985 to work for WMJI. Consultant John Gorman "John is one of the most unique radio guys you'll hear ... He could get off the phone with a comedian and go right to a congressman. There were times when authors would go on and John would ask these detailed questions, and the author would be like, 'You actually read my book.' So few radio guys would, but John always did." Cumulus SVP Corporate programming, Mike McVay says When I was a PD and morning man in Wheeling WV, in the early days of my career, John was the morning man at WGAR AM in Cleveland. I could hear it in Wheeling and listened to him on my way to work. Lanigan motivated me. I learned programming talent by listening to him. I stole from him. He made me a better talent and helped me to grow into the PD that I became. When I became a consultant full time in 1984, I stole John for WMTX/Tampa. He was there one year, which was as long as his non-compete, and we then hired him for WMJI/Cleveland. He has been at WMJI ever since. I don't know why he is retiring, because he sounds as good as ever and his ratings are still huge, but I congratulate him on an amazing career. I wish John all he best. Mark Nolan will be taking Lanigan's place, starting April 1.

Things Turn Ugly As Boston Hosts Engage In Twitter Battle THE MOUTH, JANUARY 27TH, 2014 –– Ever since 98.5 Boston Sport's Hub morning show of Toucher & Rich eclipsed the longtime market leader Dennis and Callahan show on WEEI, things have gotten, to say the least, a little tense. According to larrybrownsports.com Fred Toucher (Toettcher) and Rich Shertenlieb have been very vocal on the air and through social media by letting their listeners know that they are beating WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan Show. On Saturday morning, WEEI’s John Dennis had apparently had enough and went after Toucher on Twitter. He began by going after John Wallach, who handles sports headlines for T&R.” Wallach’s Twitter handle is @KenGriffeyRules. A follower asked Dennis if he could bring Wallach along with him to an event that WEEI will be holding at a Resort Casino. Dennis went off. @jpriordan12 @FoxwoodsCT sure, if you want to hang w the single most talentless irritating broadcaster in Boston history. @KenGriffeyRules — John Dennis (@JohnDennisWEEI) January 25, 2014 - @KenGriffeyRules will get his ass kicked if he shows up in my face EVER." Dennis’ followers began to ask Dennis questions like “Have you been drinking?” He said he was simply tired of listening to Toucher and Rich’s crap and then took aim at Toucher. "..nope. DONE taking their idiotic *hit. Quiet for 2 yrs. no more." John Dennis -- Toucher is a hideously ugly *ussy w NO GUTS. SICKS listeners on me for 2 yrs. Come see me DOUCHE BAG. — John Dennis - Dennis closed the war by guaranteeing his show will pass Toucher and Rich’s show this year. Of course, Toucher finally responded by taking aim at Dennis' age - SEE OTHER TWEETS HERE

Daughter Of Slain Radio Host Claims Step-Father Killed Her THE MOUTH, JANUARY 24TH, 2014 –– Kimberly Pack, daughter of April Kauffman (L), the radio host killed at her New Jersey home in 2012, said yesterday her step-father, Dr. James Kauffman, is responsible for her mother's murder and should not get insurance money he’s been fighting to receive. According to NBC/Philadelphia, in a federal legal filing submitted yesterday, Kimberly Pack charges that April's husband Dr. Kauffman is “responsible for the intentional killing." This marks the first time anyone has been openly accused of April Kauffman’s death. Pack says she is speaking out now after being brought in to a civil lawsuit filed by Dr. Kauffman, who has been attempting to collect the $600,000 in life insurance taken out by his former wife. Both Pack and Dr. Kauffman are beneficiaries. Ed Jacobs, an attorney for Dr. Kauffman, called the claim "nonsense." "Dr. Kauffman has lost his wife in the unsolved homicide. He's cooperated fully with the Atlantic County Prosecutor Office's investigation. Ms. Pack has been interviewed multiple times, multiple times over the course of the investigation and my client has never been charged." Dr. Kauffman is suing Transamerica who has refused to pay off policies because it had not received a copy of the police report in the case. In a counterclaim filed by Transamerica, it said they needed to review a copy of the police report in the homicide before determining whether to pay out the policies.

Damon Albarn from Blur and Gorillaz will make his solo debut at the inaugural BBC Radio 6 Music festival, which begins next month. Midlake, Kelis, Haim, Luke Sital-Singh, the Horrors, Metronomy, Jimi G, Drenge, and Outfit have been confirmed for the Friday night (28 February), with Albarn confirming his second show following yesterday's news of his Latitude slot in 2014, while Saturday (1 March) night's bill features the National, Franz Ferdinand, Jake Bugg, Bombay Bicycle Club, the Staves, James Blake, Wild Beasts, Lykke Li, Jagwar Ma, Nick Mulvey and Kiran Leonard, with Craig Charles closing the stage at the end of the evening. Station playing in trouble for playing too much music - Global Radio has been found in breach of its licence after only one person complained Heart Cornwall wasn’t operating within the requirements of its published Format. The complainant said the station was not broadcasting enough local news or speech to make it a ‘full service local station’ since changing from Atlantic FM to Heart. After investigation, during a three day monitoring period, Ofcom (our version of the FCC) found the Cornwall-specific material within presenter breaks outside of weather and traffic bulletins on Heart Cornwall typically accounted for less than five minutes of output per day. The average level of speech on the station was around 22% – less than the expected amount of 30-50%. This expected amount refers back to Atlantic FM’s original Format which Ofcom says should still be referenced to ‘in spirit’. As a result of the complaint, Ofcom is putting the Licensee on notice that, should similar issues arise, it may consider taking further regulatory action. BBC Radio Northampton presenter Stuart Linnell run over by a police car - The incident happened just outside the radio station 20 minutes before he was due to start his breakfast show. Stuart sustained severe bruising to his lower back and pelvis, and cuts and bruises on his face and legs.
