[LISTEN] Jenny McCarthy Calls Out Mariah Carey On Radio Show Over 'Train Wreck' Performance THE MOUTH, JANUARY 4TH, 2017 –– Jenny McCarthy, who co-hosted “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” says that Mariah Carey‘s disastrous performance wasn’t about technical problems, but that “her voice is not there anymore," reports pagesix.com. “It’s completely unfair and bulls–t for [Mariah] to blame Dick Clark Productions,” McCarthy said on her Sirius XM show on Tuesday. “I think Mariah was nervous as hell. I think she chose really tough songs to try to sing along with. I think ‘Emotions,’ that song, I mean her voice is not there anymore. I don’t think there is a problem with her inner ears. I just don’t. I think she used it as an excuse.” Carey said her earpiece did not work, and her team accused the show of sabotaging her performance for ratings. Dick Clark Productions called the allegations “defamatory, outrageous and, frankly, absurd.” McCarthy says she tried to have sympathy for Carey, but that her “sympathy stopped, however, the moment she accused Dick Clark Productions of sabotaging her performance.” “Now I do understand our egos of course want to blame everyone but itself for mistakes,” she explained. “If Dick Clark were alive today, I guarantee he would be on air right now fighting back. He’s not, so I’m going to … I have never seen a production company more supportive of their musical guests. So for her to defame them was so incredibly insulting for the group of people who work their balls off preparing and rehearsing.” She also pointed out that Carey’s backup dancers managed to hear the music and keep up with the beat. BMI Files Legal Action Against RMLC Over Rates
THE MOUTH, JANUARY 4TH, 2017 –– Last month, Irving Azoff’s Global Music Rights entered into a legal action with the Radio Music License Committee (RMLC), which represents over 10,000 commercial radio stations in the States. Filing a lawsuit accusing antitrust violations, GMR accused the RMLC of operating a ‘cartel’ which deliberately suppressed royalty payments to songwriters for music used across its network. On December 24, GMR offered RMLC stations a temporary license to play songs by its clients. According to Music Business Worldwide, fellow PROs such as SESAC and then ASCAP have since re-signed a deal with RMLC for the next five years, covering their repertoire at a mutually agreed rate. Yesterday (1/3/17) BMI filed an action writing, “Given the unmatched caliber of BMI‘s repertoire, our superior market share on radio, and the ever-increasing value that BMI music brings to the radio industry across all its platforms, we believe the RMLC’s proposal falls well short of what is in the best interests of our affiliates.” Mike Steinberg, BMI The society filed the action in Federal Rate Court to set interim fees for radio stations represented by the RMLC – while BMI and the RMLC negotiate the terms of a new five-year deal beginning in 2017. BMI said that the RMLC had ‘proposed an interim rate well below BMI‘s previous deal, the effect of which would have a significant impact on the royalties BMI pays to its songwriters, composers and music publishers’. Steinberg stated, “We attempted to negotiate in good faith with the RMLC for many months, and just before the end of the year, the RMLC presented an interim rate that significantly undervalues the work of BMI’s songwriters. “Given the unmatched caliber of BMI‘s repertoire, our superior market share on radio, and the ever-increasing value that BMI music brings to the radio industry across all its platforms, we believe the RMLC’s proposal falls well short of what is in the best interests of our affiliates.”

JACOBS: Learning From The 'Tweeter In Chief' THE MOUTH, JANUARY 4TH, 2017 –– For those who wondered if President Elect Donald Trump would cut back on his tweeting once elected, well, judging by recent posts, likely not. Taking note of this is Jacobs Media head, Fred Jacobs, who blogged long ago that Trump was having an unprecedented impact by ignoring protocol, and running his own campaign. "I compared Trump to Howard Stern,' wrote Jacobs. "And ironically, the two had a connection as the campaign wore on. Long before Trump, Stern earned his reputation by defying conventional wisdom and “the way we’ve always done it.” Jacobs adds, "Don’t believe me? Well, consider that when Stern was in his heyday in commercial radio, the question on everyone’s mind was “Did you hear what Howard Stern said today?” For most of 2016, the question was, “Did you hear what Donald Trump said (or tweeted) today?” That sense of brashly ignoring traditional mores and standards is what helped propel both these personalities to the status they enjoy today." Jacobs believes we can expect more of the same in 2017 and beyond. As Stern vilified morning radio’s “zookeepers” and their goofy, predictable bits, it’s very likely Trump will do the same thing during his Presidency. Think about “benchmarks” like the Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon or the Easter Egg Roll. There’s every possibility Trump will dump them, hand them off to Ivanka, or totally reinvent them. But the likelihood of him doing it the same old way is very low. -- A key reason why Trump’s tweets are so consistently read, debated, and discussed is the consistency of his activity. Not a day goes by (or even a few hours) without him reacting, opining, prodding, or provoking on Twitter -- How Trump’s tweeting patterns will change on Friday, January 20th remain to be seen. I’m betting he’ll be tweeting at the same rate, but maybe then he’ll be known as @POTUS. READ COMPLETE BLOG HERE

Guaranty Broadcasting Suing Walton and Johnson Over Move To New Stations In Louisiana THE MOUTH, JANUARY 4TH, 2017 –– Following John Walton and Steve Johnson's announcement of moving their “Walton and Johnson” morning radio show to new stations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Guaranty Broadcasting is now suing the duo over their actions for allegedly violating the terms of a long-running contract reports businessreport.com. Formerly heard on The EAGLE 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge and Bayou 95.7 FM in New Orleans, the show began broadcasting from 5:30 to 9 a.m. on iHeart station WJBO Newsradio 1150 AM and 97.7 FM Baton Rouge and in New Orleans on News Talk 95.5 FM WRNO. Although the move became public a day ago, EAGLE 98.1 owner Guaranty filed suit against Walton and Johnson back on Dec. 13. According to the suit, Walton and Johnson allegedly violated the terms of their agreement with Guaranty, which stated that the contract, initially signed in 2006, automatically renews for two years unless either party gives written notice. According to the suit, “neither party ever gave to the other any written notice of intent to terminate or not renew the W&J Affiliation Agreement … as required in order to avoid the automatic renewal of the contract.” The suit also suggests the two sides spent much of October and November butting heads over new terms for the contract. Guaranty was trying to reduce Walton and Johnson’s base fee amount in exchange for a longer contract term. The duo was unwilling to agree to such changes, the lawsuit says. In a Facebook message, Guaranty says a new live local morning show will be introduced on Monday, Jan. 9.

OH WHAT A NIGHT: Carey's Team Cries Foul Over Rockin' Eve Debacle; DCP Calls 'Sabotage Claim 'Absurd' Seacrest Gets Stuck In Times Square Elevator JANUARY 2ND, 2017 –– Seemed like a perfect ending to a rather unusual year. Mariah Carey tweeted that “Sh** happens” and appeared to have a sense of humor about technical difficulties that caused her performance to 'go down in flames' during ABC’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” special reports Variety. She began by singing “Auld Lang Syne” and then segued into her single “Emotions,” but the sound to her earpiece apparently wasn’t working. Carey’s team reportedly cried foul and contacted the show’s producer, Dick Clark Productions, according to TMZ, alleging that the technical difficulties happened purposely to goose ratings. Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances," Carey spokeswoman Nicole Perna said Sunday. Carey's team went on to tell Entertainment Weekly what actually happened. READ HERE. PHOTO/ Screengrab WATCH HERE Dick Clark Productions later responded in a statement, which read: "As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that dcp, as producer of music shows including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, New Year's Rockin' Eve and Academy of Country Music Awards, would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd." Meanwhile, the day didn't start out so well for KIIS-FM and Rockin' Eve host Ryan Seacrest who got stuck in Times Square elevator. Seacrest said he and about five other people got stuck in a Times Square elevator for about 35 minutes before an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America" and were rescued by firefighters. The group made phone calls and joked about broadcasting from the space if necessary.PHOTO/instagram

Former WMMR, WMGK Host Bubba John Stevens Passes Away At 66 THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND, 2016 –– Former longtime 93.3 WMMR and 102.9 WMGK radio host John Laboranti — better known as Bubba John Stevens — died this week at age 66 after a long battle with cancer, reports philly.com. WMGK announced the host’s death Thursday night via a blog post, calling Stevens, “one of the most knowledgable DJs on the airwaves.” “I will never forget hearing the crazy rock and roll stories I used to pry out of him,” says WMGK host Andre Gardner. “He was one of the sweetest guys I ever met in the business.” Laboranti began his Philadelphia radio career working weekends at 94.1 WYSP in the late 1970s. Before long, he moved on to WMMR, where he worked afternoons and middays throughout the 1980s and '90s. It was at WMMR that Mr. Laboranti began going by his “John Stevens” moniker, longtime WMGK host John DeBella says. Mr. Laboranti, at the time, had followed former WMMR host (and current iHeartMedia program director) Joe Bonadonna on-air, and “management had decided that two names that Italian was too much for one radio station,” DeBella says. DeBella gave Stevens his “Bubba John” moniker, owing the honor to a series of promotions Mr. Laboranti had done for the now-defunct Rib-It restaurant chain, as well as the popularity of 1981's high school sex comedy, Porky's.
