NIELSEN: Millennials Most Trusting In Nearly All Advertising Formats

HE MOUTH, OCTOBER 21ST, 2015 –– A recent Nielsen global survey found that trust levels in advertising have remained fairly consistent across earned, owned and paid formats over the past two years.

7Taking a deeper look at how age and where we live impact our trust levels and willingness to take action: Millennials (age 21-34), who came of age with the Internet, have the highest levels of trust in online and mobile formats, followed closely by Generation X (age 35-49). While that may not come as a surprise, it’s not just online and mobile advertising formats where Millennials exceed the average. They also show the highest levels of trust in 18 of 19 advertising formats/channels, including TV, newspapers and magazines

“Millennials consume media differently than their older counterparts, exercising greater control over when and where they watch, listen and read content—and on which device,” said Randall Beard (SHOWN), president, Nielsen Expanded Verticals. “But even if they rely less heavily on traditional channels, their trust and willingness to act on these formats remains high. While an integrated, multi-channel approach is best across all generations, it carries even more importance when reaching Millennials.” READ MORE HERE

Nielsen And Katz Radio Group Team For Voter Ratings

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 21ST, 2015 –– Nielsen announced that Katz Radio Group has signed an agreement to license Nielsen's Voter Ratings service for all 48 radio Portable People Meter (PPM) markets. Nielsen's Voter Ratings service will provide Katz with deeper understanding of how radio reaches voters with specific political views while strengthening its commercial inventory to political campaigns. The service combines Nielsen Audio's PPM data with key voter categories. These new insights, broken out by political views among Democrats, Republicans, independents and unregistered adults, will help Katz 7sell stations' ability to deliver voters to political campaigns more effectively, gaining more political ad dollars.

"Layering our listeners' passions with Nielsen's advanced political targeting provides candidates with an exciting new opportunity to engage voters in 2016." Pierre Bouvard, chief marketing officer at Cumulus | Westwood One commented, "Recently during Advertising Week, Jim Stengel, the former CEO of Procter & Gamble, said: 'Marketing in the modern world simply will not work without data.' Today, Katz and the American radio industry boldly launch a powerful data-driven voter-targeting platform. Adults 25-54 is not a demographic, it's a family reunion. These 10 political segments, based on actual voter behavior, are far more precise than broad age and sex demographics. Campaigns can now find their voter targets on the right radio format, station and dayparts."

TIM COOK: Apple Music Has 15-Million Users; 6.5 Million Paying Subscribers

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2015 ––  Speaking at WSJDLive, The Wall Street Journal’s global technology conference, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said the company has 6.5 million paying customers for Apple Music and 8.5 million customers on three-month trials.

According to The WSJ, after the 3-mos. trial period, users pay $9.99 a month for individual subscriptions or $14.99 for families. The first batch of customers came off the trial period at the end of September. In August, Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue, who is overseeing the rollout of Apple Music, said it had 11 million people on the trial version of the service. That indicates nearly 60% of those users agreed to pay for the service after the trial period ended.

By comparison, Spotify, which launched in 2008, claims to have 75 million active users and 20 million subscribers. Cook said consumers are responding positively to one of the main differentiating features of its service: human curation of playlists. “The runway here is really good,” he said. Mr. Cook also said that the new version of Apple TV will start shipping at the end of next week. Cook said he sees a “massive change” coming in the automobile industry as major technologies shift the sector away from today’s combustion-engine focus. He said he sees software, electrification and autonomous driving technologies playing a crucial role in the cars of the future.

Drew Lane & Detroit Sports Part Ways Over Show Content Issue

7THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2015 –– Greater Media announced that Afternoon Drive host Drew Lane will not be renewing his contract with Detroit Sports 105.1 in the Motor City. Lane has been on the air on the station since August of 2013. Prior to that, he served as the morning show co-host at WRIF-FM. “Drew is a phenomenal talent and has been a valued member of the Greater Media family for over 21 years. Both sides regret an agreement could not be reached on the direction of the show moving forward. We are truly sorry to see him go and wish him all the best." In the interim, Midday Personality Matt Dery will serve as the fill-in host on the show.

Steve Chessare, vice president/market manager for Greater Media Detroit tells Detroit News, the issue wasn’t money. “The only issue we had is in show content,” Chessare said. “Drew has done a phenomenal job for Greater Media for 24 years, and he was instrumental in us getting the sports station launched, but we’ve come to recognize that we’ve got to be true to our format, which is sports, both to the audience and our clients and partners, that we deliver a sports product. “I was trying to impress on Drew to infuse more sports into the show, and Drew was not comfortable doing any more than he was doing right now. We had an issue, in that we weren’t recycling the audience throughout the rest of the day and vice versa."
