Canadian Radio Star Charged With (S)exual Assault

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 26TH, 2014 –– Shortly after release of this morning's lead story on former CBC radio host, Jian Ghomeshi withdrawing his $55 Million lawsuit against the Canadian Radio group, came word that he has now been charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of “overcome resistance – choking,” Toronto police said in a news release. According to the Criminal Code, anyone found guilty of attempting to choke someone to overcome their resistance to the commission of an indictable offence faces a maximum punishment of life in prison. (S)exual assault carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. According to theglobeandmail.com, Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters he has "no additional information" on the charges and that he would not comment further because the matter is now before the courts. "Other than the information we released earlier, I have nothing to add to that," he said. The chief did encourage any victims of (s)ex assault to come forward to police. "I want to offer them my assurance that they will be treated with dignity and respect, that my people are well trained in these investigations and in dealing with concerns that victims may have." As Jockline reported earlier, at least three women have lodged formal police complaints against the former radio starhost. Ghomeshi was relelased on Oct. 26, three days after lawyers representing him showed two CBC executives photos, e-mails, text messages and video that showed what CBC leaders later described as “graphic evidence that Jian Ghomeshi caused physical injury to a woman.” Ghomeshi decided to show the CBC the evidence as proof that his (s)exual encounters, which he has said were sometimes “rough,” were also consensual. Ghomeshi was to be released on $100,000 bail after he was arrested today.

Former Host Withdraws $55 Million Lawsuit Against CBC

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 26TH, 2014 –– Former host Jian Ghomeshi (L) has now withdrawn his $55-million lawsuit against the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. According to theglobeandmail.com, 'The civil suit has been dismissed with costs in favor of the CBC,” said Chuck Thompson, head of public affairs for the CBC. The CBC will be awarded $18,000 in costs, though the suit’s dismissal must still be formalized with a court order. Mr. Ghomeshi does not receive any money through the agreement he has reached with the CBC, Mr. Thompson said. Mr. Ghomeshi had originally filed the lawsuit a day after he was fired from the CBC on Oct. 26, claiming breach of confidence, defamation and punitive damages. Reportedly, this came after CBC executives were shown video, photographs, text messages and e-mails that showed him causing physical “injury” to a woman. Since then the company launched a third-party investigation and Toronto Police are in the midst of their own probe after three women contacted them with complaints of (s)exual assault. In a 1,586-word statement posted to his Facebook page – and since removed – Mr. Ghomeshi said he has engaged in “rough (s)ex,” but that, “Everything I have done has been consensual.” According to the CBC, Ghomeshi will now contest his dismissal through a grievance for reinstatement already filed with the help of the union that represents him. Ghomeshi's attorney confirmed the lawsuit “has been resolved” and that “Mr. Ghomeshi will address all issues in the lawsuit in binding arbitration in accordance with the collective agreement between them.”
