[LISTEN] Brown's Coach Causes Uproar After Calling Johnny Manziel 'A Midget' In Radio Interview; Then Apologizes

7

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 9TH, 2014 –– What could be worse than sitting on the bench all season following a storied college career as a football quarterback? How about being called a 'midget' by your coach? That was the case yesterday as Cleveland Brown's head coach, Marvin Lewis (inset), was interviewed by WLW/Cincinnati's Lance McAlister. When asked about the difference in preparing for Manziel, Lewis said, "you'll get a little bit more movement if Manziel's the quarterback, the thing that they did against Buffalo. But other than that, no, it doesn't impact you at all. You've got to go defend the offense, you don't defend the player, particularly a midget.'' Former Bengal's player/turned co-host Dave Lapham nearly fell out of his chair by shouting "whoa!" Following the remark, Browns fans went crazy and Lewis later apologized. "I apologize to Johnny and the Browns and all the fans in Cleveland," Lewis said. "It was just a poor remark. I really didn't mean anything by it," said Lewis. LISTEN HERE PHOTO/Shutterstock

Remaining Show Members Pay On-Air Tribute To Former Host Following Exit

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 9TH, 2014 –– Here's something you don't hear or see often: A departing show member becoming a special topic of the day by his remaining show members. That was the case this week, by design, on Rock 100.5/Atlanta in the wake of longtime show anchor, Larry Wachs (pronounced wax) exiting the show along with a joint announcement of Jason Bailey (not to be confused with Sun Broadcast Group head, Jason Bailey) taking over on December 15th. According to Rodney Ho of The AJC, Sebastian Davis, who compiles most of the audio for the show, led the show instead of Wachs. “You may have heard in the Atlanta Journal Constitution,” Davis said, “it’s going to be a little different. Larry is no longer on the show. We wish him well. He has a lot of fans.” At around 8 am, each member of the former 'Regular Guys' spoke about Larry. They didn’t go into why he left, but did say how important he was to their lives and career, particularly “Southside” Steve Rickman (shown) and Tim Andrews. Rickman said 'I wish Larry all the best in the world. It was a great run. You have to embrace change. To Larry Wachs, yeah c’mon and one last peteetong.” Hats off to Cumulus management for this extra classy move.

Cybertip Leads To Arrest Of Anchorage Host On Child Porn Charges

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 8TH, 2014 –– A popular Anchorage morning host/PD has been accused of possessing and distributing child pornography to dozens of people and for soliciting pornographic images from children, according to k7tva.com. Jimmy O'Brien, whose real name is James Laplante, from KASH 107. 5/Anchorage, was arrested late Thursday and charged with five counts related to distributing and possessing child pornography and online enticement of a minor, according to a statement from the Alaska Department of Law. The Anchorage Police Department learned of the 48-year-old’s alleged crimes Oct. 2 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) filed two “Cybertip” Anchorage area reports, according to charging documents. In one case, Instagram reported through NCMEC that user “thematthewwhartley” uploaded 13 images of child sexual exploitation to the account, the charges say. Authorities determined the account belonged to Laplante and that one of the IP addresses used to upload the pictures originated from his home address. In a second instance, an image flagged by Google was linked to an IP address that originated at Clear Channel Communications ( iHeartMedia). A search of Laplante’s home and office revealed more than 1,000 images of child sexual exploitation on the external hard drive connected to his work computer. PHOTO/APD

77Smerconish 'Talk' Optioned For TV Feature

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 8TH, 2014 – Move over Kramer. It looks like another TV show built around talk radio is headed to TV. But this time, it appears far from a sitcom as Warner Bros. has optioned the rights to the book “Talk” by CNN and SiriusXM host Michael Smerconish. According to politico.com, 'Talk' chronicles the path of a rising star in conservative talk radio who is forced to balance his ambition with his conscience as he wields outsize influence in the crucial state of Florida during a presidential election. The studio plans to turn the novel into a one-hour “explosive drama, exposing the inner workings of conservative talk radio and campaign politics” with hopes of it hitting the airwaves before the 2016 election. Smerconish said in an interview, “Like anyone who’s ever written a novel, as I wrote it I envisioned it on the screen. Of course in most cases that doesn’t come to pass and now this looks like it will, and I couldn’t be more excited ... I can definitely see ‘Talk’ on a television screen.” Executive Producers Jim Leonard and Michael Robin, who are named to direct the project if it goes to pilot, are known for their shows: "Major Crimes", "Closer," "Dexter" and "Nip/Tuck"

[WATCH] Hosts Take On Repairs For Rockford's Clock Tower

7

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 8TH, 2014 –– For anyone who's ever driven through Rockford, IL, no doubt you're aware of its iconic Clock Tower landmark. Iconic or not, it has needed repairs for some time and it finally took a couple of enterprising radio hosts to get the job done. Jim Stone and Terry Turan, affectionately known as Stone and Double T on their' low-budget morning show on 104.9 WXRX, decided to take on the project themselves along with the help of Mike Schablaske, executive director for Transform Rockford. He says the project is symbolic for the change in attitude and spirit that he hopes to see in the city. According to northernpublicradio.com, “The transformation of a community isn’t being done by an organization or a group of people--it’s being done by a community.” Turan said construction for the tower will begin in the spring, but fundraising could begin as soon as January. He says repair quotes for the clock range from $3,000 to $15,000. One of the things that neither of us knew when we decided we wanted to Fix the Clock Tower, the bottom of the structure was all glass. We didn't know that they had covered it up years ago.
When we saw this, we knew we wanted the glass exposed, but we didn't know what kind of damage the covering did to the finish. We don't know if we can keep the glass uncovered just yet, but it is looking OK so far. WATCH HERE

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 8TH, 2014 –– Calling it the World Headquarters of Rock, former WCCC Hartford PD/Host Mike Karolyi and other former members of the iconic rock outlet have launched their own internet station irockradi.com. "Born in 2014 out of the ashes of WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut USA, iRockRadio.com is now your home for all things Rock!, post its announcement. Located on the Farmington campus of the Connecticut School 7of Broadcasting, iRockRadio.com says it's committed to serving the rock fan with 'engaging personalities, music news, exclusive concert events, music, music and more music.' He says he plans to do some the same stuff they did on terrestrial radio. "We'll do the interviews, we'll have the artist in here; we'll give away tickets and prizes" and interact with listeners. iRock's Stephen Wayne says they'll go back to listener intensive radio like they once had at WCCC. Karolyi added: "We will bring together the engaging personalities from terrestrial radio and little interruption like music streaming services. WKRP Cincinnati To Go On Forever With An Assist From Shout Factory

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 8TH, 2014 –– Looks like one of the most popular TV series ever built around the beloved cast of WKRP in Cincinnati will be around indefinitely. Shout! Factory recently reissued it on DVD which collected licenses to include most of the original music broadcast on the show. WKRP in Cincinnati — which ran on CBS from 1978 to 1982 — was the first American prime time television show to take rock seriously as a subject. According to npr.org, when WKRP re-appeared on TV Land in the mid-2000s, a number of re-recordings were subbed in, as they were when the first season appeared on DVD in 2007. Now, Shout Factory has issued all four seasons of WKRP in Cincinnati as a box set — and with a handful of exceptions, re-licensed the original music as well.
WKRP's creator and producer Hugh Wilson mentions on a bonus feature in the new box set, this decision was made largely because the music licenses lasted longer for shows recorded on tape.
