BBC's Radio 1 Denies Ban On Madonna Music

Alleged Report Sparks Charges Of Ageism

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2015 –– BBC Radio 1 has responded to this weekend's report by The Daily Mail that it banned Madonna from its playlists. Over the weekend, the Mail reported that the 56-year-old pop star was deemed too old to be played on the station, adding that her new single 'Living for Love' has been played just once since its debut in December. They later posted on Facebook, "Radio 1 does not ban anyone - please don't believe the papers. "The tracks played on Radio 1 are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40% of the country's 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist's age is never a factor. "In fact, Paul McCartney currently has two tracks - 'FourFiveSeconds' and 'Only One' - on the Radio 1 playlist."

According to digitalspy.com, this isn't the first time that the station has come under fire for its apparent reluctance to play songs by older artists. Morning host Nick 7Grimshaw previously claimed that Robbie Williams was "not relevant" to the 13 and 14-year-olds who listen to the station. However, Radio 1 DJ Matt Edmondson denied that age is a factor - pointing out that Pharrell Williams has had many tracks playlisted recently, and is the same age as Robbie. Meanwhile, whether this story turns out to have merit or not, it's sparked charges of ageism. According to inquisitr.com, On Radio 1’s Facebook page, listeners decried the station’s alleged decision not to play Madonna’s new song “Living for Love.” Many of the posters said that the station’s blatant ageism towards Madonna is just as bad as racism and homophobia. Others mocked Radio 1 for being irrelevant itself. All bickering aside, Madonna’s “Living for Love” now registers as one of the fifty most-played songs at pop radio.

[WATCH] Popular Baltimore Host Gets Second Chance At Life

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2015 –– As Jockline reported nearly a year ago, Mix 106.5/Baltimore midday host Maria Dennis was diagnosed with leukemia. Now, according to WJZ/CBS TV Baltimore, she’s getting a second chance at life and feels lucky to be alive. “They gave me a 50% chance of making it,” she said. Last March, after suffering from bad stomachaches, routine tests prompted hearing what everybody dreads. “I said, `Leukemia? How is that possible?'” Dennis said. She immediately began treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After four rounds of intense chemotherapy, she was put on a list for a bone marrow transplant. In June, Dennis’ prayers were answered. “I just can’t imagine someone going through a surgery for a stranger and giving their bone marrow and saving someone’s life,” Dennis said. She hasn’t decided what she’ll say to the donor. Dennis says she always expected to survive. Finally, Dennis has beat cancer. “I got an email from my doc. He’s like, `Congratulations. No signs of leukemia, cancer-free.’ It was wonderful,” she said. She believes her battle with leukemia has reminded her what’s really important in life and she hopes her message reaches others going through the same thing. Dennis says she'll continue to take chemo pills every day. WATCH HERE

George Noory And Richard Belzer Tackle Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 In New Book

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2015 –– A year after the disappearance and commencement of the international search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, no sign of the plane has been found—no debris, no bodies, no sign of the much-talked-about black box. Richard Belzer, George Noory, and David Wayne want to know why. They have written a new book, SOMEONE IS HIDING SOMETHING. Scrutinizing the theories the media and politicians claim are the “most likely” reasons the plane crashed, Belzer, Noory, and Wayne argue that if a year after a huge Boeing 777 has gone 7missing, and there’s still no sign of it whatsoever, it’s time to think outside the box. The public needs to stop being misled. If a plane and its passengers went "missing" once, what's to stop it from happening again? Some of the theories the authors consider seem implausible on the surface, but the thorough research they've done and the continual failure of politicians, aviation authorities, and military members around the world to give any indication they're wrong makes their arguments as good—if not better—than the more widely shared ones. The title of this thought-provoking volume, SOMEONE IS HIDING SOMETHING, is a line spoken by former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad—perhaps the only government official to publicly acknowledge the true reason that neither Flight 370 nor the 239 people onboard have been found. Richard Belzer is a comedian and actor, best known for his role as John Munch, the character he portrayed for twenty-one years on the NBC police dramas Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. George Noory is the host of the national radio show Coast to Coast AM, which features discussions on news and current events, conspiracy theories and all things curious and unexplained. David Wayne is coauthor with Richard Belzer of the New York Times bestsellers Hit List and Dead Wrong, and coauthor of They Killed Our President: 63 Reasons to Believe There Was a Conspiracy to Assassinate JFK, with Jesse Ventura and Dick Russell.

Pittsburgh's Flick Becomes 'Man In A Box' For Second Year In A Row

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2015 –– On one of the coldest weeks of winter, 100.7 Star Pittsburgh has partnered with The Salvation Army, Highwoods Properties, Highmark and other sponsors to raise awareness of family homelessness through the "Man in a Box" campaign. Flick, afternoon radio host of "Flick and Kelly" on 100.7 Star, was so overwhelmed by the community's response that he is taking on the challenge again, February 25 through the 27, 2015. "Living in a 4 ft. x 8 ft. Plexiglas box 12 hours a day and staying in a homeless shelter at night was not easy, but it's nothing compared to challenges that people who are actually homeless face day in and day out. If doing this for 3 days again this year helps to educate and inspire more people to help, it's more than worth it," says Flick, of his upcoming time in "the box" that will be situated at Highwoods Properties' PPG Place, near the MassMutual Pittsburgh Ice Rink in downtown Pittsburgh. Flick will once again be experiencing some of the hardships of living homeless first hand. He will have minimal shelter and heat, and only the same food provided to the homeless by The Salvation Army. It can be easy to forget that homelessness is a daily reality for many people. "The issue of homelessness is serious and deserves everyone's attention and compassion," said William Bode, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army's Western PA Division. "I thank and commend CBS radio, and especially Flick, for helping us in such a unique way to educate the public and encourage support of The Salvation Army in addressing the needs of the community." As for this week's weather in Pittsburgh, Wed/Thur/Fri's forecast calls for lows of -2º -6º -7º on each successive night.

Apple Recruits Top British Jock To Bolster Radio Division

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 15TH, 2015 –– Zane Lowe, one of the UK's most influential radio host, is leaving BBC's Radio 1 after being recruited by Apple in the U.S. The 41-year-old host who joined the network in 2003 will air his last show will air on March 5th. While the BBC didn't mention Lowe's exact position, news outlets such as The Guardian believes that Lowe is leaving to work on iTunes Radio. It's been pretty successful in the US, but not as much as Apple hoped. The Guardian suggests a 7familiar voice like Zane Lowe to iTunes Radio could make it more appealing to listeners (as well as convincing traditional radio listeners that internet radio is the way to go). 'The Zane Meets' series has been watched by millions online during his time on the station. The New Zealand-born jock has become well known for championing emerging talent and many acts have made their breakthrough after having one of their tracks named as "hottest record in the world" on Zane's show. Zane has helped launch the careers of many acts, including Ed Sheeran. Since starting at the station Zane has picked up the gold Radio Academy Award for best music broadcaster in 2010, 2011 and 2014. His show was also named best radio show at the NME Awards on four occasions. Some of the biggest names in music have played live sessions on Zane's show. Annie Mac (shown right) will take over Zane's current weekday evening new music show, starting on March 9th.

REPORT: BBC's Radio 1 Drops Madonna From Playlist; Calls Her 'Irrelevant And Too Old' For Teen Audience

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 16TH, 2015 –– 50 may be the new 40, but, according to a report, that wasn't enough to convince The BBC's Radio 1 from keeping Madonna on its playlists. Word from the UK is that Radio 1 has now banned 56-yr. old from airplay for being what it describes as ''irrelevant and old' for its teenage listeners. According to The Daily Mail, she's dominated the airwaves during 30 years as a chart-topper, but Radio 1 has decided that Madonna is an 'immaterial girl and just too old for its teenage listeners. Despite her determined efforts to look – and sound – youthful, the 56-year-old has been dropped from the station’s playlist that determines which songs are played by DJs during the day. Madonna’s latest song is 'Living For Love' and has been available for airplay since December 20 last year. ‘At the end of the day it’s all about relevance,' says a BBC rep. 'It’s natural that as an artist gets older their audience goes elsewhere and Radio 1 has to reflect that. ‘The station has a duty to meet the needs of younger listeners. I don’t think the audience is losing sleep that it is not playing Madonna in the same way that it used to.’ Contrast this with Sir Paul McCartney’s new single that IS being played by Radio 1 even though the former Beatle is 72. This is because the track is a collaboration with rapper Kanye West, 37, and pop mega-star Rihanna. A Radio 1 spokesman said: ‘Tracks are chosen on musical merit, and while around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.’ Madonna’s spokesman declined to comment. OUCH: Station Handcuffs Groom To Mother-In-Law For A Week

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 14TH, 2015 –– By our count, there were at least one million (give or take a few) Valentines Day promotions being featured at stations across the country this past week, far too many to post. That said, here's one that will continue through this week. This was Vancouver's Z95.3 which offered a Valentine’s Day ‘Doomed Groom’ contest where one lucky (or unlucky) groom would be locked to his mother-in-law-to-be for a full seven days. If they both survive, the couple (he and her daughter) will win a dream wedding in sunny Mexico. Nothing says romance like a man being handcuffed to his ‘mother-in-law-to-be’ for an entire week. Z95.3 is testing the limits of love with the Doomed Groom Contest! In January of this year, Z95 listener Matt proposed to the girl of his dreams. On the morning of Friday the 13th, he demonstrated his devotion by handcuffing himself to his future mother-in-law, Diane, for a period of ONE WEEK. There’s no love like a mother’s love for her daughter… Except maybe a husband-to-be’s love for his soon-to-be bride… So, how will they eat? Sleep? Shower? Or go to the bathroom? Ewwwwww. Check out videos at z953.ca.
