PODCASTING: Choosing The Right Content For You And How To Grow An Audience

Part 2 of An Exclusive Series

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2018 –– In part 2 of a special series on podcasting we once again turn to Mike Carruthers (L) who made the move from radio to podcasting with his program 'Something You Should Know' www.SomethingYouShouldKnow.net. The podcast has been consistently ranked in the top 50 of ALL podcasts for over a year. Mike also consults podcasters and offers free training videos and pdfs on his website www.PerfectYourPodcast.com

Today, the subject turns to 'Choosing the right content' and how to grow an audience. "Nothing is more important than choosing the right topic and format for a podcast," says Mike. "It is so different from radio where you have to fit in to the radio station’s format. In podcasting there are no restrictions – it’s all up to you. I suggest you think about 3 things: • Who is your audience? • Who are you really trying to appeal to? It has to be more targeted than just “Adults 18-49.” Podcasting is narrow. Trying to be all things to all people is going to make it very hard. Get a really clear picture of who that ideal listener is. Finally, • Think about sustainability. Can you keep it going for a long time? Is it a topic you like? There will be some lean times in the beginning. If you really like what you do it will carry you through. · When you get an idea, find similar podcasts and listen to a lot of them – especially the ones that are highly ranked. Go to iTunes/ Apple Podcasts and use it as a search engine and spend a lot of time listening."

In terms of growing your audience, Mike says "there is no magic formula but here is one underlying strategy that will help: Focus most of your promotion inside the podcast universe. If you promote to a general audience remember that about 3 out of 4 people don’t listen to podcasts yet and wouldn’t know how even if they wanted to. When you promote inside the podcast universe you are talking to people who already listen to podcasts. So get on other podcasts as a guest, swap advertising or buy ads on similar podcasts, etc. With that said, of course social media is a must and if you have guests, getting them to promote their appearance to their social media followers can be very helpful.

Keillor Speaks Up On Allegations: “No Button Unbuttoned, No Zipper Unzipped”

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 26TH, 2018 –– In Garrison Keillor's first extended interview since Minnesota Public Radio severed ties with the former "A Prairie Home Companion" creator and host in November, he described several sexually suggestive emails he exchanged with a former researcher who accused him of sexual misconduct as “romantic writing” that never resulted in a physical relationship reports The Post Register. Keillor said he never had a sexual relationship with the woman, a freelance contributor to the show at the time. “No button was unbuttoned and no zipper was unzipped,” Keillor told The Associated Press. “I never kissed her … This was a flirtation between two writers that took place in writing.”

The woman said in an email response through her attorney that Keillor “had the power to provide or take away job assignments and opportunities. He also acknowledged several times that power imbalance between us, recognizing how his conduct could be offensive when it was coming from the person for whom I work.” She also said she wasn’t interested in anything but a “collegial” relationship with Keillor. “He was my mentor and employer,” she said. “As such, he had power over me. Every time I said ‘no’ or tried to avoid him I feared I was saying ‘no’ to my future.” MPR spokeswoman Angie Andresen said the station stands by its handling of the claims against Keillor. “Our decision was not based on flirtations or fantasies, but based on facts confirming unacceptable behavior in the workplace by a person in a position of power over someone who worked for him,” Andresen said by email. PODCASTING: Making The Jump From Radio To Podcasting; Is It Really Worth It?

Part 1 of An Exclusive Series

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 26TH, 2018 –– –– Seems like every conversation lately includes the question, "what do you think about podcasting?" And while nearly everyone has an opinion, few have realized the success or possess insight more than Mike Carruthers (L) who made the move from radio to podcasting with his program 'Something You Should Know' www.SomethingYouShouldKnow.net. The podcast has been consistently ranked in the top 50 of ALL podcasts for over a year. Mike also consults podcasters and offers free training videos and pdfs on his website www.PerfectYourPodcast.com

In the first of a multi-part series, we asked Mike if making the jump from Radio to Podcasting is really worth the effort for most talent? "It was certainly worth the effort for me, he says. "As a career broadcaster, I was working a lot harder and making a lot less money. I had to do something else and podcasting was the one thing that could utilize many of the skills I had from radio. And yes, there is money in podcasting. Advertisers are seeing great results because the listeners are very engaged. Since listeners choose the podcast and they choose when to listen, the engagement level is quite high. There are an estimated 300,000 podcasts on iTunes. Most podcasts never get a large enough audience to interest advertisers because they are just dabbling. But when you learn how to grow a podcast audience and are willing to do the work to get there, the rewards are waiting. Many podcasters I know have from 20-300 downloads a day. 'Something You Should Know' averages over 25,000 downloads a day and is still growing."

Tomorrow, Mike explains 'How to choose the right podcast for you and how to grow an audience'
