STUDY: Bigger Isn't Always Better When It Comes To Local Vs. National Contests

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2018 –– NuVoodoo Media Services announces that its latest NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study of 3,041 respondents, ages 14-54, across all PPM markets revealed that, among likely PPM participants, 59.8% of respondents are more likely to play a local radio contest with a smaller prize than the 35.7% of likely PPM participants who said they were more likely to play a national radio contest with a larger prize. The NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study is conducted twice a year to learn more about those who are most likely to say “yes” to the opportunity to wear a meter in order to provide NuVoodoo clients with competitive insights and advantages that they can exploit to capture higher ratings.

7Among the new questions NuVoodoo probed this time around was a choice between two hypothetical contests. One option is a contest where the 25th local caller wins $250. The other option is a contest where the 25th nationwide caller wins $1000. It’s the choice between the local contest, with a smaller prize, or the group contest, with a larger prize. Overall, the smaller prize – against a smaller, local, entry pool – beats the larger, nationwide prize by better than 2:1. But, when NuVoodoo narrowed the sample to those who are most likely to participate in a PPM-type methodology, the gap also narrows – with a higher percentage lured in by the bigger prize. The study was conducted by Carolyn Gilbert, President and CEO, NuVoodoo Media Services, or Leigh Jacobs, EVP, Research Analysis, NuVoodoo Media Services - Join Carolyn and Leigh for our 'Tech For Talk' session at TSBC 9 in Dallas.

[WATCH] KIRO Calls In John Curley For Play-By-Play Of Parking Lot Car Break-In

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2018 –– Over 2 million views later, ICYMI here's one more look at Seattle’s KIRO Radio 97.3 captured surveillance footage of a burglar attempting to break into an employee’s car USING A MOP HANDLE! On a whim, the station called in local broadcast legend John Curley to narrate the footage. As you can hear for yourself below, the result was pretty cool.

On Twitter, the station posted, "Last night we captured surveillance footage of a vandal trying to break in to one of our employee’s vehicles in our parking lot. While the suspect is still at large, we took the liberty to have John Curley give his play-by-play of the incident. Awful Announcing wondered how the suspect is still at large when he was last seen crumpled in a ball barely moving after a fall? You’d think he would’ve been pretty easy to apprehend at that point. And One More: KDWB's Dave Ryan Hangs (And Sings) With Basketball Great, Shaq

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2018 –– Minneapolis' longtime host Dave Ryan tells Jockline, "I’m not one for posting celebrity pictures because meeting them is part of my job. But randomly meeting Shaq at the small airport near my house was really cool! I was there to look at all the private jets here for the game and there he was, waiting for his plane’s brakes to be thawed. I couldn’t resist and he was super nice. I'm a pilot so I knew there would be a lot of big planes flying into the local airport. I drove over there Sunday morning to look at all the big private jets that were parking there, because there was no room at MSP. I was talking to some friends who worked there and they said, "Yeah, Shaq is right behind you. His plane's brake lines froze so he's waiting for them to thaw out."

Ryan explained, "I turned around and there he was, just sitting with some friends.I didn't want to be "that guy" and ask for a selfie, but I knew it would be a great story, so 15 minutes later I walked over. I asked him why he was leaving before the game and he said he just wanted to go watch it at home. "Did you have a good time while you were here?" He asked, 'Yeah I'm a deejay and I worked at a club the other night. I play white man rock." And he started singing "Jessie's Girl" so I joined in as his friends started laughing at us. Then he launched into "I Love Rock and Roll" and he and I and his friends were all singing. That's why he has such a big smile on his face. One of the best, if not THE best celebrity encounters I've ever had."

BUSINESS: Cumulus Reaches Agreement To Continue Running Merlin Media Chicago

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 2ND, 2018 –– Cumulus Media Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement with Merlin Media 7regarding the operation and sale of WKQX-FM and WLUP-FM in Chicago. Under the terms of the agreement, Cumulus will no longer be required to acquire the Chicago stations for approximately $50 million, and Cumulus and Merlin will temporarily extend the local marketing agreement under which Cumulus has been operating the stations while Merlin conducts a sale process for the stations. Cumulus expects operations at the stations to continue uninterrupted during the sale process.

“We’re pleased to reach this mutual agreement, which establishes a clear path forward for these stations and our employees in Chicago following months of negotiations with Merlin,” said Mary G. Berner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cumulus Media Inc. “We continue to be interested in permanently acquiring these stations on economic terms that make sense for our business. In the meantime, as we have for the past several years, Cumulus will continue to operate WKQX-FM and WLUP-FM while Merlin seeks a new owner. Importantly, nothing is changing in the near-term. It is business as usual for team members, advertisers and partners, and we look forward to achieving a favorable outcome for all parties involved.”

The agreement with Merlin provides for an approximately three month extension of the local marketing agreement with additional extensions thereafter, exercisable upon mutual agreement by Cumulus and Merlin.

[WATCH] Threats Aside, David Mueller Tells 'Inside Edition' He's Not Quitting

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 2ND, 2018 –– Inside Edition sent its cameras all the way to Greenwood Miss., market-ranked 193, to visit David Mueller, the host accused of groping Taylor Swift who just started a a new job at KIX 92.7. Swift's fans have been 7outraged and the station has been bombarded with tweets and phone calls. There’s even been a bomb threat that was sent in via email and resulted in a police investigation.

7“The money wasn’t the important thing. This is my passion. Doing morning radio is what I love. I’m just really happy to be on the air.” Mueller, who last worked at KYGO/Denver, market #17, is joined on the show by co-host Jonbob Wise (TR). He thinks all the threats are “crazy.” “I’ve never seen such angry people in my life,” he told IE. Station general manager Tommy Tatum (BR )says his network believes in redemption. “As an individual, I would not condemn a person to a lifetime of not being able to feed their family for a mistake they made five years ago,” he said.

“I came here to do a radio job, do the best I can every morning and I am going to continue to do that,” Mueller said. Mueller wants everyone to know the threats are not going to keep him from doing his job. “If Taylor fans want to hate me, that’s their prerogative,” he said. “If they want to scare people with bomb threats they should be arrested. I’m not going to quit.” WATCH HERE

Station Mulls Future Of 'Babe Bracket' Contest Amid Consternation Of Fans

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 2ND, 2018 –– KABZ-FM, The Buzz' Little Rock is mulling the future of its longtime 'Babe Bracket' contest which ranks the female reporters and news anchors in the area by attractiveness. Although the station was already in the process of rethinking the concept, a local TV New Director's blog asking that it 'finally be stopped' has struck a nerve with local fans 7and friends. “The days of referring to educated women who serve as role models to our children as ‘babes’ are over, wrote Austin Kellerman of KARK-TV (TL). It’s time to evolve with the times. The contest is featured on its “The S7how with No Name” morning show and sponsored by 'Seductions Lingerie.' "You should know I’m a fan of “The Show With No Name,” writes Kellerman.

"For the last 6 years, Tommy, Roger, David, and R.J. have served as the soundtrack to my drive to work," Kellerman adds. "The team does great work on the radio, an exceptional job spotlighting area events and happenings, and has essentially become a marketing tool for what’s good in Arkansas. For all those reasons, it’s even more important they dump the Babe Bracket."

Buzz PD Justin Acri (BL) said in a statement: Regarding the “Tommy Smith Babe Bracket”, this is a long-standing bit that the host has been done annually in conjunction with the March Madness bracket for more than twenty years, going back to the host’s previous station. 103.7 The Buzz’s hosts are constantly evaluating content and this bit is no different. Even before the consternation from our friends and station fans at KARK-TV, Tommy Smith (the morning co-host who began the bit) was weighing his options of continuing with it this year or replacing it with another bracket idea. That evaluation continues this morning after some productive on-air discussion on our top rated morning show that included a call from KARK-TV’s news director and many opinions from our fabulous listeners. A final decision on how to proceed this year and going forward has yet to be made. I do feel compelled to say, although unrelated to this particular topic, that our station and this show and these hosts in particular have been responsible for raising tens of thousands of dollars in our community for charitable causes over the last few years and always work to be good community partners.
