PIERRE BOUVARD: Pandora Is Clueless About In-Car Listening

7

THE MOUTH, APRILL 11TH, 2016 –– In his most recent blog, Pierre Bouvard, Chief Marketing Officer of Cumulus Media and Westwood One, responds to Pandora’s recent piece on in-car listening noting that AM/FM crushes Pandora in the car. AM/FM has a 72% share of listening in the car, according to Edison Research. AM/FM holds 93% of the lead-in audience during commercials breaks, according to Arbitron/Nielsen and Media Monitors. Plus, 74% of in-car listeners say they mostly keep turned to one station or only occasionally change the station, according to Edison Research.

7

Bouvard adds, most channel switches Edison observed do not count in Nielsen ratings. Nielsen requires at least five minutes of listening in a fifteen minute period for audience credit. AM/FM is the soundtrack of the American worker. Pandora wishes they were used in the car; but barely anyone listens. Pandora’s bigger issue is YouTube and Spotify and hoping that they don’t become the MySpace of streaming audio. SEE ENTIRE BLOG HERE

Phlash Phelps Surprised With Billboard For 50th Birthday

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 11TH, 2016 –– SiriusXM '60'S On 6' host Phlash Phelps has apparently endeared himself to listeners in Scranton Pennsylvania as he found his face on area billboards for his 50th birthday reports timesleader.com. Currently, Phelps is on a mission to visit all 50 states in the next year and had passed through Scranton on Sunday. Doreen Yakoski, of Springville, worked for Lamar for 19 years and was the charting manager when she pitched the idea to feature Phelps on a space.

“I was listening to his show as I do every day, and people call in from all across the country,” Yakoski said. After hearing Phelps take a caller from Scranton to discuss the Steamtown National Historical Site and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Yakoski realized he’d spent time in the area. She went to general manager Tom Donohue with a proposition. Donohue, also a fan of Phelps’ show, consented to the idea, and Phelps traveled to Scranton to see the advertisement. “The fact that Lamar right there in Scranton wanted to do that for me is incredible,” Phelps said. A Baltimore native who worked at 16 different radio stations before landing his gig at Sirius, Phelps was bitten by the travel bug in his 20s. “I had 47 states finished by the time I was 29,” Phelps said. “In the last 10 years, I’ve been to all 50, but I’ve never been to all 50 in a calendar year.” Pennsylvania is scheduled as Phelps’ second state. Yakoski said Scranton is essentially kicking off the radio host’s country wide expedition.

EDISON STUDY: Listeners Switch 22 Times Per Commute

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 8TH, 2016 –– Even as in-car audio use continues to evolve, Americans remain “button punchers,” show a new study from Edison Research. Nearly 75% of those who consume audio in the car are likely to switch at least occasionally over the course of their commute. The average user of AM/FM radio switches the station 22 times per commute, while those using other platforms switch an average of 9.3 times per commute. That’s just one of the findings of Edison Research’s “Hacking the Commuter Code,” a first-of-its-kind national survey of those who commute 20 minutes or more daily, alone in a car or truck.

New methodology from Edison allowed them to capture the actual, second-by-second behavior of commuters across the country. “Hacking the Commuter Code” finds that there is a wide variance in behavior among in-car audio users, with results depending on age, the type of content being consumed (e.g., music vs. spoken-word), and access to streaming or satellite radio or integrated multi-media systems. Edison president Larry Rosin (shown) says, “This is an entirely new research design to help answer definitively what has only been speculated about until now. We’re confident that ‘Hacking the Commuter Code’ will take its place alongside Edison’s ‘Share of Ear’ and ‘Infinite Dial’ studies.
