Is Today The Day For Apple's Radio Launch?

THE MOUTH, JUNE 4TH, 2013 –– Today's the day at the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. With Apple now having reached deals with all three major music labels, it appears likely they'll unveil its free Internet radio service. Apple still has to work out deals with music publishers, Having already done so with Warner/Chappell, it all but assures the rest of the publishers will sign on soon. When Apple enters online radio, it will be difficult for companies like Spotify and Pandora to compete, said Laurence Isaac Balter, chief market strategist at Oracle Investment Research in a New York Times article. He said Apple will be at an advantage because it will have deeper control of the iPhone software and hardware, as well as more data about its own customers, than outside companies would, so that it can make smarter music recommendations for customers. Streaming music will also give customers a chance to listen to music they would otherwise never have heard before, and then perhaps buy the songs in iTunes, Mr. Balter said.

TV Host Calls Radio's Alex Jones An Idiot [VIDEO]

THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– Ever since the infamous Charlie Sheen, '2 And 1/2 Men' fiasco, the name Alex Jones, conspiracy theorist and syndicated radio host, began popping up more and more on national TV. You'll recall earlier this year when he got into a one-siding 15 minute shouting match with CNN's Piers Morgan while discussing gun control and The Sandy Hook school massacre. This past weekend, he went worldwide as he appeared across the pond on BBC's Sunday Politics with Alex Neil to discuss the recent meeting of Bilderberg group members. He told Neil that the creation of the euro was a "Nazi German plan", and that "Bilderberg is heavily involved in the EU plan" and "it is a Nazi plan", according to The Digital Spy. Guest David Aaronovitch, who has written on the subject, asked Jones If the group is so powerful why are you still alive?" Jones then claimed that he had received calls threatening to cut off his head off. Jones began to shout and Neil told him to "shut up" and that it was "not his own radio show". "I'm here to warn people. You keep telling me to shut up. This is isn't a game," shouted Jones, to which Neil said "You are the worst person I've ever interviewed." Then turning to the camera, Neil says "We have an idiot on the program." WATCH VIDEO

Host Passes Out During Blood Donation Promotion [VIDEO]

THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– There's hardly a host alive who can't relate to Wally, of BSR Australia's Wally and Kel Show, who gave an on-air blood donation for a good cause, but apparently lack of sleep and a bad chair didn't go too well with the event. As part of a drive to encourage the local community to give blood to its Australian Red Cross Blood Service, he and his partner did a synchronized blood transfusion, however, during a commercial break, Wally become unresponsive and one of the nurses told staff that he had passed out for a short period of time. A fellow host back at the station said "The line went a little quiet during a commercial break. Fortunately, Wally awoke with about 20 seconds to go before the commercial break. Once to, he blamed "the chair and getting up a 4 o'clock in the morning." WATCH VIDEO

TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT? Slacker Radio Launches Trend Measuring Feature

THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– Slacker Radio has unveiled a new way to look at audience engagement: The Slacker EQ. According PC Magazine, The "Engagement Quotient" is based on an algorithm that crunches millions of data points generated whenever listeners stream their music. EQ then ranks songs on a scale ranging between one and 100. "Terrestrial radio works by call out research," said Jack Isquith (shown), Slacker's senior vice president of content programming and strategic development. "They play a 5-10 second hook of a whole bunch of songs and ask people mtheir opinions. There's also a People Meter, a device you carry with you that tracks which songs are played." The Slacker Radio EQ will be the basis for a weekly chart on the Slacker blog that will showcase the top 40 songs on the service. Slacker Radio is also putting out a dedicated station that counts down the 40 most engaging songs every week. Isquith expects to see differences between what's topping other charts and what's trending in Slacker EQ.

Simon Cowell Egged By Former Show Contestant

THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– Leave it to a former Britain's Got Talent contestant who didn't make the cut to take aim at judge Simon Cowell--literally. Natalie Holt, a backup singer for the singing brothers Richard and Adam Johnson, rushed to center stage during their performance and began throwing eggs at Cowell. She was mquickly overtaken by security. According to NME, she failed to make it past the bootcamp stage in 2012 so, apparently, decided to offer one last performance for the sometime caustic judge. She later released a statement saying: "I want to apologize to Richard and Adam for overshadowing their performance ... I basically took a stand against people miming on television and against Simon and his dreadful influence on the music industry." The show was eventually won by an Hungarian shadow dance troupe and was watched by a peak audience of 13.1 million. Richard and Adam came third despite Holt's interruption. Amazingly, both singers continued singing as Holt pelted Cowell with eggs. And she apparently was a pretty good aim. Cowell is seen at the close of the video removing clothing. WATCH VIDEO

51 Years Ago: Beatles Make First Recording 'Love Me Do'

7

THE MOUTH, JUNE 7TH, 2013 –– Most people reading this were perhaps but a sparkle in your parent's eye when The Beatles made their first recording, Love Me Do. Ken Townsend, who assisted George Martin at this session on June 6, 1962, said in an interview at abbeyroad.com “They looked just like four peas in a pod and I could not tell one from the other for some while, except for Ringo when he took over from Pete Best on the 4th September session. As for the first song, he said in hindsight it was a toss-up between Love Me Do and Ask Me Why. What fascinated him was that none of the lyrics seemed to include words of more than four letters. Of interest, this session almost cut short. "After running through the songs, it was obvious we were getting distortion from the bass guitar. Norman Smith tried the usual remedy of reducing the level in the studio and cranking it up on the mixer, but to no avail. George Martin said if we could not find a solution, then he might have to abandon the session.
Townsend suggested a possible alternative of getting the large Tannoy speaker from Echo Chamber One and driving it with a Leak TL12 power Amp I had upstairs, which I was taking to Rome later that month for an operatic recording. By some miracle it worked. READ ENTIRE INTERVIEW HERE
