Canada Ban On Voltair Stirs Questions On Its Future In U.S.

2

THE MOUTH, JUNE 16TH, 2015 –– Numeris, the Canadian rating organization, has now banned the use of the Telos, 25/7 Voltair from its member stations. Following last weeks announcement, researcher Richard Harker now wonders if the U.S. could be next.

2'By forcing stations to pull Voltair.' He says, 'Canadian radio will return to the old way, rewarding PPM friendly formats and punishing formats that PPM has trouble encoding or decoding." Harker is troubled that Numeris appears to have made its decision based on erroneous information saying, "We now have convincing evidence that PPM picks winners and losers based on station programming material, format, and listening environment. With PPM listeners alone do not pick winners and losers."

Unlike Nielsen, Harker points out, Numeris is a not-for-profit, member-owned organization. Its responsibility is to its members, not to shareholders. READ COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE

John Lanigan Joins Cleveland's 'The Spew' From His Florida Patio

THE MOUTH, JUNE 16TH, 2015 –– Cleveland's iconic John Lanigan can be heard once again on the air in Cleveland where he broadcast live each morning from his patio in Clearwater, FL. Airing five days a week, he'll join his former nemisis Mike Trivisonno on 'The Spew,' a sort of male version of TV's 'The View.'

According to cleveland.com, Lanigan said "Last summer I was home in Cleveland and the guy who had the job before me had left for some reason. They called me and asked if I wanted to fill in. When Trivisonno 2and I had been at different stations he was always taking shots and making digs at me. So that made for some controversy." The combustible chemistry worked for listeners and the station asked Lanigan to become the regular guy. "I have this little device which connects me right to the station," he said. "I do the show from the outdoor patio behind my house here in Clearwater. A lot of shows do that now."

As for the show, Lanigan says they're both trying to make a good radio show. "When I first went into the studio in Cleveland to do the show and we met in person I was surprised to find that we actually got along."

FCC's O'Rielly Rips Into Enforcement Bureau

Says Commission seems more intent on obtaining newspaper headlines trumpeting accusations and eye-popping fines - O'Rielly

2THE MOUTH, JUNE 15TH, 2015 –– In a speech to the Federal Communications Bar Association last Thursday, FCC Commissioner Michael O'Rielly ripped into the agency's enforcement bureau saying they seem dangerously misguided; more intent on obtaining newspaper headlines trumpeting accusations and eye-popping fines,' he said.

In a copy from his speech, O'Rielly said "I am before you today to discuss the state of the Federal Communications Commission enforcement. My central premise is that the FCC's overall approach to enforcement has gone astray over the last many months. In fact, let me go a step further to report that it has entered a territory that can only be described as dangerously misguided...The Commission seems more intent on obtaining newspaper headlines trumpeting accusations and eye-popping fines. In other words, self-aggrandizing fanfare is a major objective and often appears to be more important than case foundation, correcting the violation or establishing a reasonable deterrent. I recently heard from a couple of parties that were potentially subject to enforcement actions. Having the good sense to try to discuss their issues with the Enforcement Bureau, each was told that any potential settlement would generate a penalty in the multiple-hundreds of millions or billions and require an admission of guilt. To make the situation more outrageous, the Bureau indicated that there was little room to negotiate; it was a take it or leave it offer rather than the beginning of a process to come to a settlement position. Suffice it to say, no agreements were reached in these circumstances."
