Communications Professor Examines Radio Hosts' Influence In New Book

THE MOUTH, JULY 19TH, 2016 –– David Crider is adjunct professor for the School of Communication, Media, and the Arts at the State University of New York at Oswego and has released a new book: "Performing Personality." This book examines how radio announcers construct, prepare, and perform their 2on-air personalities.

According to the book's description, Crider conducted interviews with key on-air personnel at eleven broadcast stations in order to analyze how each individual created a narrative on-air personality, conducted conversations outside of their performance, were affected by the setting and situation, embraced the role of the listening audience, and reduced the social distance between them and listener.

Crider tells osweocountytoday.com, “The research really came out of all the questions I had when I was working in radio.” Inspired early in his radio career by the likes of Bill Baker in Syracuse and Don Geronimo and Mike O’Meara of the nationally syndicated Don and Mike Show, Crider says “It was always the people who, when I listened to them, I thought, ‘They must be having so much fun, that’s what I want to do." In the book's introduction, he writes:“The growing success of podcasts such as ‘Serial’ and ‘WTF with Marc Maron’ is built around the ability of relatable announcers to tell compelling stories. As multimedia storytelling takes on greater importance, it will be incumbent upon announcers — from startup podcasters to broadcast veterans — to be able to create that meaningful connection with listeners across as many platforms as possible.” ORDER HERE

Baton Rouge Radio Serves Up Coverage Both Locally And Nationally Following The Latest Police Shooting

4

THE MOUTH, JULY 18TH, 2016 –– For the second time in as many weeks, six more police officers were gunned down, this time in Baton Rouge leaving three dead, and one who remains in critical condition. As with the Dallas shooting on July 7th, which left five dead, local radio quickly dropped its regular programming and went int7o non-stop coverage mode. Often overlooked in news events such as this are the added reporting that local stations take on for its company's stations nationally. Cumulus-Baton Rouge with stations such as KQXL-FM/106.5 – WRQQ/103.3 – WEMX/94.1 – WIBR 1300 – and WXOK/1460 all teamed for coverage not only locally, but assisted with national reports for Westwood One and CNN. 4

Over at iHeart Media, with stations KRVE/96.1 FM - WFMF/102.5 FM – WYNK-FM/101.5 – and N/T WJBO 1150 AM provided non-stop local coverage, as well as, issuing reports and updates for several of its national stations. iHeart, which just did a deal with NBC News, has Dave Brannen as NBC News Radio staff correspondent in Baton Rouge. He was on the story from the beginning, reporting for our network of about 1000 stations, and appearing in WJBO with details on the shooting throughout the day. “In the moments after the news broke NBC News Radio shifted some resources from the setup at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland to the shooting. Our Baton Rouge Correspondent provided updates and live reports for iHeartMedia stations from coast-to-coast” - Chris Berry, Senior Vice President, General Manager – 247 News

3Guaranty Media's Mike Benson, a former host, now Senior Acct. exec. for the group tells Jockline: "When shots took down 6 officers killing three, our morning team of Kevin Gallagher and Bill Profita (shown) went live across 3 Guaranty Media Stations Talk 107.3, Eagle 98.1 and 100.7-The Tiger giving live up to the minute coverage for Baton Rouge, Hammond, Lafayette, New Orleans' North Shore and from Houma to The Mississippi Line. His team quickly encouraged blood donors, food and other supplies to the respective channels to support our fallen officers and those injured. "In my 40+ years of radio, other than during Hurricane Katrina, this was the finest live radio I have heard," said Benson. 1 PHOTO/WJBO

Taylor Swift Must Face Former Denver Radio Host In Court Proceeding

THE MOUTH, JULY 18TH, 2016 –– A judge has rejected Taylor Swift's request to prohibit former radio host David Mueller from attending a deposition reports The Hollywood Reporter. She alleges he 2groped her during a 2013 meet and greet before a Denver concert. Mueller is suing her for slander while she's brought a countersuit alleging sexual assault and battery.

The legal action is taking place in a Colorado federal court under some 'intense secrecy.' Many of the court filings have been filed under seal. According to judge's order on Thursday, however, Swift's attorneys brought an oral motion at a telephonic discovery hearing that in part aimed to stop her deposition from being videotaped. The judge denied that request. Additionally, Swift was unsuccessful in prohibiting Mueller from attending the deposition. The judge did grant that "Only an original videotape will be made of Ms. Swift's deposition." That videotape shall remain in the custody of Mr. Jesse Schaudies, Ms. Swift's business manager.

LA Host Fired Following Body-Shaming Snapchat Post Of Naked Woman

THE MOUTH, JULY 18TH, 2016 –– Former Playboy Playmate of the year/turned radio host Dani Mathers has been let go by Cumulus-owned KLOS-Los Angeles following a wrath of complaints she received after posting the photo of a naked woman on Snapchat at an L.A. Gym. She captioned the photo: "If I can't unsee this then you can't either."

“We are aware of the issues surrounding Ms. Mathers’ recent Snapchat, and do not condone such actions or messages,” said a Cumulus Media 2spox in a statement to TheWrap . “Ms. Mathers served as an independent contractor for KLOS, and all of her scheduled on-air segments and appearances have been cancelled.” Mathers appeared regularly on KLOS’ “Heidi & Frank” morning show, in segments such as Put Your Man Where Your Mouth Is and Under the Covers.

Mathers has since apologized in a Snapchat video. Saying that because she’s new to the social media app, she accidentally posted the photo to her story instead of sending to a friend. She promised that she would never do it again. “I have chosen to do what I do for a living because I love the female body,” said Mathers. “I know that body shaming is wrong and that’s not what I’m about.”

[LISTEN] Tara Reid Bolts From Jenny McCarthy Interview

4

THE MOUTH, JULY 18TH, 2016 –– During last Friday's Jenny McCarthy Show on SiriusXM, Tara Reid bolted from the studio after McCarthy asked Reid about her recent stint on WE's Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars: According to usmagazine.com, Tara was not happy that McCarthy brought it up. “I think the whole thing is absolutely stupid and silly. And, like, we’re not even talking about it because there’s confusing things about it,” said Reid who was who there to promote her latest film, Sharknado 4.

“So right now, we’re just talking about Sharknado. It's not worth the time to talk about.” But McCarthy pressed on: “Are you )p)issed off at the people’s comments or just the show in general?” “Babe, I asked you, please let’s not talk about this show,” Tara begged. “We’re all here about Sharknado.” McCarthy finally asked, “So did you have to get into shape for Sharknado or are you still in the same shape you’ve always been?” She then asked Reid about her plastic surgeries. Ouch! Reid seemed to pause the interview for a moment to speak to someone else. "So, you're good and done, not moving forward with plastic surgery?" McCarthy added, making an effort to diffuse any tension. "I think I've made that clear about 100 times," Reid fired back. "Maybe you only read the bad things, but I've made that really clear for so many years." At this point, Reid says, "It was really nice talking to you and really good luck with your show." "Good luck to you, too, and I'm so excited about Sharknado and I hope you stay married," McCarthy sniped. LISTEN HERE
