Orlando's Beloved Scott McKenzie Succumbs To Cancer

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 12TH, 2015 –– After a seven year battle with Lymphoma Cancer, Orlando's beloved Scott McKenzie, 24-year morning host of Mix 105.1, has died at the age of 59. His death was announced on his Facebook page. McKenzie began in 1991 at Mix 105.1 along with Erica Lee who left in 2010 and was and followed by Dana Taylor and Jay Edwards. According to The Orlando Sentinel, in recent years, he had told listeners about his three battles against non-Hodgkin lymphoma and last Friday revealed he was talking with hospice and planning his goodbyes. McKenzie wrote on last Friday's website, "Your constant love and support has gotten us through so much during this cancer battle. Knowing you've been by our side has been sincerely appreciated by my family on a daily basis. Most of all, thank you for the privilege of waking you up all these years."

Brian Thomas, Corporate PD/Cumulus Media, was the PD who hired Scott from Boston after they switched BJ105 to Mix 105.1. He told Jockline "You know it’s a good hire when he rules the airwaves for over 20 years. Scott and Erica used to call me Dad and it was always a good morning show meeting when they get me laughing so hard I'm spitting up my Diet Pepsi. I am so proud of Scott on and off the air - he's a great man, and probably learned more from him about prep than any other morning show. And last year had the pleasure of playing golf with him' - The teams were Scott McKenzie and Scott Shannon and Dave Robbins and Brian Thomas.

Scott Shannon told Jockline: Scott was one of the finest human beings I've have ever known. He was smart, talented and so humble. He lived his life with class, dignity and passion. His true loves were radio, music and most of all, his wife Fran, and his daughter, Lauren. Scott Shannon

Alphabet It? Google To Reorganize Under Company Alphabet

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 11TH, 2015 –– Google, first formed in 1998, announced it is being re-organized as part of a larger, new company called Alphabet. The announcement was made yesterday by Google chief executive Larry Page who now becomes the head of Alphabet.

7"Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren't very related," Page wrote in a blog. "Alphabet is about businesses prospering through strong leaders and independence. "In general, our model is to have a strong CEO who runs each business. We will rigorously handle capital allocation and work to make sure each business is executing well. Page added: "We'll also make sure we have a great CEO for each business, and we'll determine their compensation." Page said "We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search! "We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for! I should add that we are not intending for this to be a big consumer brand with related products - the whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands." [LISTEN] Former Co-Host Calls Into McKenzie Show For Salute

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 11TH, 2015 –– MIX 105.1 co-host Jay Edwards said on yesterday's show it was a difficult morning, our first time on the air after Scott’s announcement on Friday that he had begun discussions with hospice care. 'There isn’t a playbook or a plan when something like this happens. But what we wanted to accomplish was to let Scott, Fran and Lauren know we love them and that the community loves them and boy did you ever prove it!' he said.

Dropping regular programming yesterday and opening up the phone lines to longtime fans, among those calling in was none other than Erica Lee, Scott's co-host for nearly twenty years. Last Friday Mckenzie posted at the station's website that final healthcare arrangements have been made, and now he's focusing on his comfort 'as I say my goodbyes.' Lee and McKenzie were a team for 20 years before she lost her job in 2010. According to The Orlando Sentinel, Lee said "It was tough to hold it together .. I told a couple of stories and quoted a little bit of audio from Wolfgang Puck -- 'There's a familiar voice' -- that Scott had extracted from an interview with Puck and replayed over the years. I echoed the sentiments of everyone who was on before me (including former producer Big Jim & Bob Frier) about how much Scott means to me and Central Florida. I'm grateful I was allowed to be on." [LISTEN] Call-In To Tampa Show Leads To Help For Couple Dealing With Domestic Violence And Drug Abuse

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 11TH, 2015 –– Tampa/102.5 The Bone's afternoon host, Drew Garabo was talking to "Nicole," a woman who called in to discuss a topic. However, according to Fox 13/Tampa, the call turned serious when she mentioned a broken hand. "Can we talk about how you fell and what you fell on, 'cause that more intrigues me than the atheism versus gay thing," he said.

After some nudging, she finally admitted it was caused by her boyfriend. "What happened was I grabbed my boyfriend's phone because he text people he shouldn't be texting, and he grabbed my hand and snapped it," she said. Garabo managed to convince Nicole and her boyfriend to meet at a church, where the boyfriend admitted to drug problems and said he needed help.

"It was one of those things where you're immersed in it, and you really can't get a gauge on what's really happening," Garabo told Fox 13 on Monday. "I just did what I thought was the right thing to do by keeping them on the line, directing them to a place where a Pasco County Sheriff's Deputy could meet them, and both of them could get the help that they needed." "It's really made me reconsider just how we talk to people, and how we get involved in people's lives," he said. LISTEN HERE
