[LISTEN] Host's Comments Helps Divert Listener From Considering Suicide THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– A caller to yesterday's syndicated Michael Savage show who weighed in on the host's assertion that suicide is an “aggressive act” that shows no consideration for loved ones, told the host his frank talk about the subject helped him decide not to take his own life. Identifying himself as Joe he told Savage he had been contemplating suicide for the past several months, especially in the past week. Joe said that when he heard of Williams’ suicide, he asked himself, “If a guy like that could, why not me?” On Tuesday's show, Savage, who disclosed he and Williams lived in the same San Francisco-area neighborhood, urged any listeners who might be considering suicide to think about how it would affect their loved ones. Joe rang up Savage and said: 'Your show yesterday – I’m not going to say prevented me – but it did make me think about my kids and my wife,” the caller said. Savage said he had met Williams many times when the two were walking their dogs. Savage described Williams as “a nice guy, and genuinely funny, too.” He added “Committing suicide is the most outrageously aggressive and selfish act you can commit against your family,” Savage said. After discovering Joe was suffering financially, he asked his audience to join in helping Joe get through the rest of the month by donating through the Savage Legal Defense Fund. LISTEN HERE

JACOBS: 'BJ Shea Steps Up To Superstar Status At MSBC Chicago' THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– As we've always said, it's not us, but our attendees who help us shine most at Morning Show Boot Camp. This was never more evident than during last week's 26th Annual Morning Show Boot Camp in Chicago. Among them, radio's beloved BJ Shea (L - KISW/Seattle) whose opening address not only endeared himself further with his radio comrades, but caught the attention of radio furturist Fred Jacobs. In today's blog, he writes 'You may be thinking that it’s “Seattle DJ Week” on this blog – and you wouldn’t be wrong. But it turns out the most fascinating stories in radio last week weren’t about the whereabouts of Casey Kasem’s corpse or what happened to radio’s Q2 revenue – they were about Bob Rivers hanging up his headphones and B.J. Shea stepping up to superstar status at “Morning Show Boot Camp.” Boot Camp is one of the most unique events in all of radio because most of the people in attendance make their living on the air. If you believe that the future (not to mention the past and present) of radio is its personality – the people behind the mics – then you would enjoy Boot Camp. There is a different vibe in the room when it’s filled with performers – the folks who are paid to entertain and to inform. They are the faces of most great stations. And the list of radio icons in attendance was a long one: The Bert Show, Paul Castronovo, Roula And Ryan, Rick Rumble, Dave & Carole, Mark & Mercedes, Ross Britain, 2 Guys Named Chris, Larry Norton, Brother Wease, Fitz, Phil Hendrie, and many many more. These personalities come together every year to compare notes, compete for the best bits, have a lot of laughs, and hang out at a conference that almost has a radio throwback feel to it. Yes, radio has changed. It’s a business that is obsessed by ROI, IPOs, and EBITDA. But let’s not forget the DJ. No matter how much Wall Street thinks it has us bought and sold, drawn and quartered, radio is a circus. And the Big Top was in all its glory in Chicago last week. And B.J. Shea was the ringmaster ... B.J. truly set the tone at Boot Camp. In a 30-minute speech filled with passion and inspired self-deprecation, B.J. looked more like he was giving a TED Talks presentation than one of his signature rants. No notes, no slides, but a steady stream of introspective advice and dead-on observations for a room of talent looking for a guiding theme from this Boot Camp. ... “Great art comes from crazy people” was one of B.J.’s lessons. Crowd Buys In To Miley Cyrus Impersonator Outside Concert THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– Imagine bringing a Miley Cyrus impersonator (complete with bodyguards) outside one of the pop diva's concerts and both fans and local media buying into it? This was the case as Miley Cyrus came back to Kansas City and 95.7 The Vibe (KCHZ) made their presence known outside of the Sprint Center! They brought in a Miley Cyrus impersonator and had the crowd going crazy, with many people believing it was Miley and stopping to get their pictures taken (the staff was calling her "our special guest"). KCTV5 even did a live segment featuring 95.7 (inset)The Vibe outside of the Sprint Center. During the show the excitement continued with Miley Cyrus spotting our impersonator in the crowd, talking to her from the stage and even giving 95.7 The Vibe props before showing a picture of our Miley impersonator on the big screen! Since the concert The Kansas City Star also wrote a story about 95.7 The Vibe bringing in their very own Miley Cyrus look-alike. The night was a big win for everyone involved! NICELY DONE! TOP RADIO NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Montreal Host Looks For Girlfriend With Posters By Graham Mack THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– Radio personality Stuntman Sam is looking for love in a rather old-fashioned way: posters. According to montrealgazzette, Sam Lupovich, a.k.a. Stuntman Sam on The Beat 92.5 FM’s morning show, has posted handbills all over downtown Montreal to announce he’s looking for a girlfriend. The poster features a picture of the 31-year-old with a description of himself as serious, fun, outgoing, employed and very handsome. As the setup goes, after a decade of freelance fun and adventure in Toronto, Sam moved back to his beloved hometown of Montreal last fall — and has since had some trouble finding a girlfriend. “I’ve tried online dating and all that jazz, but obviously that hasn’t worked out …” his poster reads. “Pretty sure it’s them, not me .. If you’re single (or not), and ready to take a chance on a good guy willing to throw himself out there, take my number and do something about it.” If you want to see how Sam's doing, give him a call on 514 798-2015. BOB FM becomes “Robin FM” in Robin Williams Tribute –– BOB fm in London’s Home Counties paid tribute to the late Robin Williams on Tuesday by re-branding as “Robin fm”. The daytime music schedule was interspersed with clips of Robin’s performance as the radio DJ Adrian Cronauer from the 1987 film, “Good Morning Vietnam”. Special sweepers were made that said, “Robin FM”. Program Director Graham Mack said, “We all grew up watching Robin’s movies and he always got a warm reception every time he appeared in London. It was the least we could do to honour the life and work of one of the greatest entertainers of all time”. Another BBC apology, This Time For Racism -- It was an awkward on-air moment when Iain Lee’s producer decided he’d had enough and walked-out mid-show. Iain took the gag too far by telling him to “...go and do the Black and Asian Show”. Iain and the BBC have apologised for the incident which happened on Iain Lee’s Breakfast show on BBC Three Counties. The show and the radio station have shown another ratings drop in the latest survey leading some commentators to speculate that the on-air argument was a pre-planned if poorly executed stunt. Mismatched couple get married The couple who won the ‘Punching Above Your Weight’ contest on Newcastle’s Metro FM earlier this year have tied the knot. Darren Donaghey and Kate Cathcart often turn heads when walking down the street together. Kate is a gorgeous blonde, but because Darren is, by his own admission, not a work of art. Their love for one another never faltered and the pair have silenced detractors by getting hitched at Matfen Hall in Northumberland. STUDY: Radio Keeping Pace With Pandora's Listener Growth THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– NuVoodoo Media Services has announced its initial findings from its fourth and latest NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study. The company interviewed nearly 1100 respondents, ages 14-54, in all PPM markets to update NuVoodoo’s insights on the relationship between broadcast radio and the leading digital music provider, Pandora. The findings indicate that 62% of Pandora users listen to Pandora at least 30 minutes per day and nearly as many Pandora users spend that much time daily with broadcast radio. Per the graph at right, as Pandora experience increases, so does the percentage that listen to it at least 30 minutes. But the percentage spending at least that much time with broadcast radio did not decrease. Carolyn Gilbert, President and Chief Executive Officer for NuVoodoo Media Services said: “NuVoodoo is committed to understanding our industry, the radio listener and especially the potential ratings participant. It’s our job to take this information, synthesize it and continue our mission to provide the industry with cutting-edge products that respond to the world as it is in 2014.” NuVoodoo will be releasing more of the study’s key findings over the coming weeks, including which social media platforms are getting user traction and which ones are seeing user declines. Seacrest Notches Scripted Deal With CBS TV Studios THE MOUTH, AUGUST 13TH, 2014 –– We felt the term 'notch' was an appropriate verb in relation to media behemoth, Ryan Seacrest who now, among his other mounting responsibilities, has closed an overall two-year scripted deal with CBS Television Studios. According to The Wrap, Ryan Seacrest Productions (RSP) will develop scripted projects for broadcast, cable and streaming under programming executive vice president Nina Wass. As for unscripted programming, RSP will continue to provide and sell projects across networks. It has a strong body of unscripted programming ranging from E!'s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and its spinoffs, Bravo's “Shahs of Sunset” and Esquire Network's “How I Rock It.” This latest deal with CBS TV Studios joins a few others for Ryan Seacrest and his production company, including CBS’ live two-hour special “Fashion Rocks,” a one-year deal with NBC for specials and contributions to E! and NBC. JACOBS BLOG: Deja Vu All Over Again For Bob Rivers THE MOUTH, AUGUST 13TH, 2014 –– Jacobs Media's Fred Jacobs quips: 'What started out as a blog...' became quite an in depth look at the life and times of Seattle morning star Bob Rivers who recently announced his retirement. In an expansive 2 part interview, Jacob's writes: 'Bob’s career exemplifies all those old school values – hard work, a belief in the team, a commitment to the community, and an understanding of what’s important' says Jacobs. He adds, 'It’s not the first time. Way back in the day, Bob walked away from WFTQ in Worcester, MA, to join a band called Legend, only to return to WAAF where his radio career got underway in 1981. So maybe Bob’s departure from Seattle radio last week is déjà vu all over again.' As for Bob's start, he tells Jacobs: 'I’ve always wanted to be a musician. When I was 5 years-old, my grandfather gave me a transistor radio and an unlimited supply of batteries. He also taught me how to use the phone. I loved hit records and DJs right away, go figure. I started calling request lines and even won a contest! I was on the air live at 5 years-old. Like many, I got into radio partly to be closer to the music scene. I took a few piano lessons in grade school, and tried to play in a band when I was about 21, but I did suck. Radio was my first love, and musicians need to get their 10,000 hours of practice. So making song parodies for my morning show was a way for me to meet and hire great musicians and record and produce perfect copies of hit records. Truthfully, that was my motivation for recording them so authentically. I could have a radio product that was better than anyone else, and follow my other passion: music.' As for his departure from radio, Bob says: 'I love radio. And I never said I was retiring, but I knew the media would. I’m sure I will do more radio. Someday.' (Bob shown right with Spike O'Neill circa 80's).
