SBS Launches First Cubatón Station With Ritmo 95.7 Miami

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 16TH, 2016 –– Spanish Broadcasting System has flipped its Miami top 40 radio station, La Nueva I95.7 FM, to Ritmo 95.7 FM, with the tagline “Cubatón y más” (Cubatón and more) reports Billboard. “I think it’s [Cubatón] becoming a worldwide phenomenon,” said Jesus Salas, SBS’ EVP of programming, multi-platform coordinator. “Everything Cuban now is fashionable and Cuban music is widely popular all over Europe. And in Miami what I saw and what I’ve been seeing is, when we go to bars they play this music over and over and no one has really embraced it enough. We were the first to break Gente de Zona in the country and the first to break Jacob Forever in Miami. I see all the different fusions that are being recorded. These artists have millions of views in YouTube, and no one is playing it on rotation. We have the station to do that.”

Cubaton will also feature other urban and reggaetón music. “The appeal is going to be Cubatón, which doesn't have an outlet in and of itself, but it will live within a Latin urban format that will include reggaetón,” said Carolina Santamarina, GM of SBS. While Cuban urban music has gained traction in recent months, to date the music is far from dominating the charts. However, Salas says, the music is there. “I’ve done extensive research on it, and there are more than 10 main Cuban artists making this kind of music, and I’ve found over 100 songs that I think are really good, and when they get exposed they’re going to become hits. There is more than enough music to create a station.”“Urban is the new pop,” said Salas. “But traditional ballads will always have a place. And Zeta in Miami will play ballads.”

'I Yelled As Loud As I Could,' LSU Radio Host Among Thousands Rescued During Baton Rouge Flood

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 15TH, 2016 –– LSU athletics department spokesman Michael Bonnette confirmed that legendary Tigers radio voice Jim Hawthorne (inset) and his wife were rescued from their Baton Rouge, Louisiana, home on Sunday reports espn.com. LSU officials spent part of Sunday frantically searching for Hawthorne, who went missing after torrential rainfall flooded his neighborhood in Baton Rouge. Bonnette said Hawthorne's cell service had been down since Saturday, so his family and friends were unable to reach him. "We were launching a boat to go rescue him," Bonnette said. "He's been found and he's safe." theadvocate.com reported Hawthorne saying, “I yelled as loud as I could, and they heard me,” the 72-year-old said. “I was in water up to my you-know-whats. I was yelling, ‘HEY! HEY!’ The motor stopped and they came around and came back.” Hawthorne, LSU’s play-by-play man for 35 years before retiring in March, and his wife had been trapped in their one-story home in the Park Forest neighborhood of Baton Rouge since flood waters began trickling in Saturday. The home lost electricity later Saturday, and Hawthorne’s cell phone battery died Saturday night, isolating the couple.

Hawthorne, 72, retired as LSU's radio play-by-play announcer last season. He had been the voice of Tigers' football since 1983 and also called men's basketball games starting in 1979. He called 387 consecutive LSU football games before missing the Alabama game last season because of a medical procedure.

CBS affiliate WAFB cites a spokesman saying that approximately 18,000 people have been rescued so far from rising floodwaters. PHOTO/LSU - YouTube

FRED JACOBS: 'I Have Seen The Future Of Radio… At Morning Show Boot Camp 28'

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 15TH, 2016 –– We'll be providing a number of glimpses this week into Talentmasters' 28th Annual Morning Show Boot Camp, but Fred Jacob's latest blog offers a great overview. "I’ve been to a number of Don Anthony’s “Morning Show Boot Camps” over the years," Fred writes. "But something was different about this one. Steve Goldstein – who presented with our Digital Dot Connector, Seth Resler – hit it immediately: the crowd was younger this year. It didn’t take long for me to make the same observation. Not only was the conference well-attended, but it was teeming with Millennials as excited about radio in 2016 as we were decades earlier.

7This scene in the Grand Hyatt bar (shown) could easily pass for a Silicon Valley event. And the MSBC crowd could match an Internet startup for energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn .. I especially enjoyed the “Masters of the Morning” hosted by Dennis Clark, featuring the venerable Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein (Q104/New York), Bert Weiss, John Ivey, Entercom/Seattle’s Fitz, and the Motor City’s Mojo (right). It was a great mix of grizzled veterans and the new guard of morning talent, mixing it up, and talking about management, preparation, research, and all the other variables that impact on-air success. That panel and others were reminders of the mentoring spirit that is alive and well at Boot Camp.

The Millennial generation so often gets an undeserved bad rap for any number of reasons. Yet, in many ways, their mission is so much harder than it was in radio “back in the day.” Business conditions are more precarious in 2016, there are more cooks in the kitchen, and the pressure to perform has never been higher. It wasn’t always that way. Most of radio’s current leaders and owners entered into broadcasting during the 7fat and happy ’70s and ’80s. Radio was a hot industry, there was easy fame and fortune to be made, and everyone wanted “in.” Today’s emerging talent are being asked to do a lot more than “4 and out the door,” oftentimes for less money, fewer benefits, and lousier perks. Radio is bad-rapped in other media, in the advertising world, and even among their peers. And yet these young up-and-coming personalities are more energized and enthusiastic than we were to just be a part of the radio business. Their excitement for radio is contagious"

I was part of a “visionaries” session hosted by Mike McVay, and featuring the aforementioned Steve Goldstein, Pierre Bouvard, and Daniel Anstandig. Believe me when I tell you I feel more pressure at these MSBC sessions because it’s nearly 100% talent in the room. Their “bullshit detectors” are turned on to “high,” and I always want to reach higher to provide the best level of 7guidance possible. Mike smoothly guided the panel, as Steve pointed out the need for talent to use multiple distribution outlets to share content.

The stars of the show were the talented members of radio’s youth corps, excited to learn, socialize, and collaborate about how to make great radio in their local markets .. Boot Camp produces that tangible buzz that makes veterans like me, Greg Strassell, Pat Paxton, Kurt Johnson, and other programming execs keep coming back to remind ourselves there’s a lot of talent, excitement, and desire out there. Now it’s our job to mentor and nurture it (as well as learn a few things or two from them). READ BLOG HERE

'Personalities Are Arguably The Single Most Important Differrentiator For Radio' Writes RAB

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 15TH, 2016 –– 'Radio station personalities are arguably the single most important differentiator for radio,' writes the RAB's latest Radio Impact blog. "These are the people that make you laugh, make you cry and have the ability to provoke 6-8 emotions in less than 3 minutes. They know their audiences. They REALLY know their audiences and they know how to have a dialogue with them. Many of these individuals share their own lives and the listener is instantaneously connected — feeling like they are part of the conversation. While all of these personalities connect with their listeners over the air, they continue to connect with them via other social media options – like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – extending that dialogue and listener connection throughout the day."

When comparing radio personalities to other media personalities, 6 out of 10 listeners say that radio hosts are “like a friend” whose opinions they trust. According to a study conducted by iHeartRadio, with even more ways for consumers and on-air personalities to interact, 4 out of 10 listeners feel personalities make more of an effort to foster a personal connection, making the radio experience inherently more social, particularly when compared to TV or streaming playlist services. They are able to accomplish this because they go way beyond the superficial, and in some cases have been known to even save lives. The blog concludes by saying personalities all storytellers that everyone wants to listen to. They deliver something no one else can – personal, local, native advertising with the credibility that no other native advertising can claim. READ BLOG HERE

Atlanta Host Reveals 10-Month Old Daughter Has Cancer

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 15TH, 2016 –– Jeff Dauler, co-host of Star 94.1 Atlanta's Jeff & Jenn Show startled listeners this morning when he revealed on today's show "I am here alone today.. As you may have heard on the show recently, Jenn’s (Hobby) youngest daughter has been sick, and the past couple of weeks were filled with doctor’s appointments and even a couple of visits to the emergency room.

Reese was admitted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and has been undergoing tests to determine exactly what she is battling and how the doctors will help her fight. Jeff shared that little Reese has a solid mass tumor near her tailbone that has started to affect her spine This afternoon, she will have a biopsy to determine what type of tumor this is. During the biopsy, they will give her a port to receive chemotherapy. Once the doctors know what they are dealing with, they will create a plan for treatment, which is likely chemotherapy followed by surgery .. As far as the show goes: Jenn will obviously be out for a few days. There is actually a radio studio IN Egleston Hospital and I have already talked to the folks at Seacrest Studios about using it, and they assured me that it’s ours whenever we need it. When we spoke last night about me making this announcement today, Jenn actually said ‘after you tell people what’s going on, get back to fun stuff. Remember why we do this show."
