STUDY: Despite Advertiser Perceptions, AM/FM Radio Easily Tops Streaming - Reaches 93% Of Millennials; Tops TV

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 20TH, 2015 –– New studies by Nielsen, Edison Research and Advertiser Perceptions reveal the audience for AM/FM radio greatly exceeds listening to streaming services, in stark contrast to advertiser estimates. The study was commissioned by leading radio broadcasters including Cumulus, Westwood One, iHeartMedia, Alpha Media, Beasley Media Group, CBS Radio, Cox Media Group, Emmis Communications, Entercom, Greater Media, Hubbard Radio, Radio Advertising Bureau, Radio One, Townsquare Media and Univision Radio, Inc., to compare advertisers’ perceptions of American audio consumption versus actual usage.

Key findings show: - Advertisers estimate that 64% of Americans are reached by AM/FM but the actual Nielsen weekly reach is 93%. - Advertisers and agencies perceive the audience share of Pandora and Spotify to be nearly the same as AM/FM. In reality, AM/FM’s audience share is 9X Pandora and 17X that of Spotify. - Nielsen data also shows that radio reaches 93% of Millennials – 22% more Millennials than TV. TV misses one in four Millennials.

“Advertisers and agencies drastically underestimate the reach of AM/FM radio,” said Lew Dickey, CEO of Cumulus and Westwood One. “This study is the first conclusive evidence of the major gap in actual and imagined performance of AM/FM and streaming outlets.” SEE REPORT HERE

More Legal Action Taken Over Pre-1972 Music

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 19TH, 2015 –– As expected, another group has filed suit over pre-1972 music royalties. This time it's ABS Entertainment filing suit in a U.S. District Court against Cumulus Media, iHeartMedia and CBS Corp. Using the Turtles case as precedent, they are seeking class action status for "injunctive relief and monetary damages sustained by Plaintiff and the Class because the Defendants have delivered music content through broadcast radio 7channels, HD radio channels, the Internet and mobile devices without consent of or licenses from the Plaintiff and the Class. As a result of their pernicious, improper and illegal conduct, Defendants have reaped hundreds of millions of dollars that rightfully belong to Plaintiff and the Class."

ABS Entertainment Inc., which owns recordings such Hi Records catalog featuring artists Al Green, Willie Mitchell, Ann Peebles and others, allege the three largest group owners are infringing on ownership rights, misappropriation of ownership and property rights, and conversion, calling the conduct "despicable"; the plaintiffs are seeking over $5 million compensatory damages on each of three counts and "restitution and disgorgement" of unlawful proceeds and revenues, including gross profits, plus punitive and exemplary damages and an injunction against using pre-1972 music.

Beats 1 Zane Lowe Radio Show Motivated By Jimmy Iovine Advice

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 18TH, 2015 –– In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Apple's new Beats 1 host, Zane Lowe, explains the philosophy behind the station, and shares two motivational quotes he keeps on the wall of his office at Apple. The first quote is something that Lowe came up with himself: "Quality and consistency creates the addiction."

Lowe says that a key part of Beats 1 is convincing 7people to return and listen again "because it has awakened something in them and they want to hear more." There's another quote that Lowe lives by, and it's a saying from his colleague, record producer and Beats cofounder Jimmy Iovine: "Don't be boring." According to businessinsider.com, "Lowe's energetic presenting style is anything but boring. He's known for shouting, singing and using sound effects during his shows." READ INTERVIEW HERE

ED. NOTE: With due respect to Iovine, veteran media executive, Walter Sabo, of Sabo Media may have well first popularized the phrase. Several years ago he was a featured panelist at a Radio & Record's Talk Radio Seminar which offered advice on what it takes to be a successful host. Following others who offered their thoughts and opinions on the topic, when the mic was passed to Sabo he quickly grabbed it and said "Don't be boring." Then, just as quickly, passed the mic to the next panelist. To this day, perhaps the shortest , but most sage advice ever offered at a conference)

Developer Plans 330 Homes On WMAL Towers Site

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 18TH, 2015 –– The developer that won the rights to 75 acres of prime Bethesda real estate, NOW HOME TO WMAL/Wash. DC Towers, plans to build up to 330 homes on the property. According to bethesdamagazine.com, John Harris, vice president with Pennsylvania-based Toll Brothers, said the company plans a mix of town homes and single-family detached homes.

When the property was put on the market earlier this year, the move raised concerns among nearby residents and government officials that more housing could pose more issues for an already overcrowded public school system and congested local roads. “We share those concerns. They’re real concerns,” Harris said. “Our future residents will be faced with the same issues.” Brokers selling the site said it could go for as much as $75 million. Toll Brothers won’t close its purchase of the site until it has made progress in the county’s approval process. The purchase price of the land, which is owned by broadcasting company Cumulus Media, is confidential until that point.

Cumulus and its broker narrowed down the choices to four leading bids before choosing Toll Brothers, Patterson said. Patterson said Mardirossian offered to donate about half of the site for a new school and a new park, with the rest reserved for a senior housing development. PHOTO/Bethesda Magazine

Radio Garage Door Contest Fuels Neighborhood Squabble

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 18TH, 2015 –– If you're planning a garage-door-decorating contest for your station anytime soon, check this out. According to Indy's Star Press, high school student Hannah Brewer, with her mother’s permission, painted the garage door of their residence in an attempt to prove she is the biggest fan of the band 5 Seconds of Summer, aka 5SOS, thus, winning ticket and a backstage visit with the group. Brewer and other followed the station's directive: “Get creative and prove you’re the biggest 5SOS fan on your garage door so the whole neighborhood can see it! ... Just make sure we can see RadioNOW 100.9 somewhere” on the door.

Brewer and a friend painted images and messages for the band members, only to get an anonymous letter titled “A NOTE FROM YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD” left in Brewer’s front doo. It said, “At first we all thought you had been a victim of vandalism on your garage, seeing how NOTHING like that has ever happened around here before … In case you haven’t noticed this isn’t LA or Chicago or Mexico and it certainly isn’t south Muncie. “There is discussion of getting up a petition, calling the newspaper and retaining a lawyer in case you don’t do the right thing over the ghetto painting … We are all sorry we have had to do this but nobody has ever treated this neighborhood in a trashy manner!”

Brewer’s mother, Carrie Mote Craig, a Catholic school teacher, called the police, who told her the painting did not violate any city ordinances. An officer agreed to pose for a photograph at the door with a thumbs-up sign. The Star Press emailed Chuck Williams, general manager of Radio One-Indianapolis, a photo of the painted door and asked whether he would find it objectionable if someone had done that in his neighborhood. He called the contest “a chance for fans to show their passion and said “we do not provide solicited commentary on contest submissions until the contest has ended. I am absolutely going to show no bias toward anybody’s entries until the contest is over.”
