[WATCH] Another Tragedy In Virginia

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 27TH, 2015 –– Yesterday, for the second time in a decade, Virginia was home to yet another vicious tragedy. This one involved the cold blooded murder of WDBJ TV's Roanoke reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward on live TV. Vester Lee Flanagan, the lone gunman who committed the murders, later died from a self-inflicted 7wound. Adding to the horror, Flanagan, who was said to be a disgruntled ex-employee of the station, had filmed the shooting, then posted on social media. This tragedy followed The Virginia Tech massacre on April 16, 2007 in which Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech, shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others in two separate attacks. Cho, like Flanagan, took his own life. That attack became the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history.

7Jockline reached out to Danny Myers, co-host of the popular Mornin' Thang with fellow hosts Monica Brookes and Zach Jackson. He told us following the Virginia Tech Massacre, this latest tragedy was especially troubling. "We went with the story non-stop all morning...staying on the air until noon, around the time the shooter was apprehended. It's not a big market so we are very close with the folks at WDBJ 7 so it was hard to cover at times. Plus it was an active shooter situation, so we had the additional role of keeping listeners safe as the police pursued the suspect. As of right now, there are no new restrictions on outside appearances. I haven't heard anything about the TV stations and their live coverage.

PIERRE BOUVARD: Is Radio The Engine Of E-Commerce?

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 27TH, 2015 –– Last month was a busy one for e-commerce. First, Amazon broke records with their first-ever Amazon Prime Day sale on July 15, 2015. Amazon's ad campaign created big awareness and sales. Six days later, Jet.com, a new e-commerce entrant, launched with a blast of PR. The New York Times said Jet.com represents "a frontal assault on Amazon.

Pierre Bouvard, CMO, Cumulus Media/Westwood One, says, 'While these two events were very different - Amazon Prime Day was heavily advertised and Jet.com launched just with PR - there was one surprising common aspect: radio listeners. Jet.com: Radio listeners showed up fastest to the game Two weeks after Jet.com's July 21, 2015, launch, market researcher Ipsos surveyed Americans to get an early look at awareness and usage of the new shopping site. Ipsos compared awareness of Jet.com among heavy/medium media users. The findings? Radio listeners were most aware of the new website! Twenty-one percent of radio listeners were aware of Jet.com followed by TV viewers (14%) and Online users (13%). What about Jet.com site visitation? CLICK HERE FOR FULL REPORT

REPORT: Internet Radio Set To Make A Comeback

“You look at the reach of radio, the number of people listening to the radio, it’s absolutely held its own for a long period of time” Mark Mulligan

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 27TH, 2015 –– Wired's Brian Barrett writes: "Based purely on the headlines and the hype, the music world would seemingly belong to on-demand streamers. That’s news to TuneIn," he says, bundler of over 100,000 free, live, streaming radio station broadcasts. 'It doesn’t just believe in the power of radio; it’s got a plan to convince you to pay for it.'

7He points out that TuneIn, much like radio, been exclusively free. But now for $8 a month, TuneIn Premium gives users access to 600 commercial-free music stations, over 40,000 audiobooks, and more. He calls it a 'direct assault' on the money pouring into streaming

“They’ve managed to end up with quite a niche proposition,” says Mark Mulligan (L), co-founder of MIDiA Consulting. “In some ways that’s good; it can be easier to monetize that than a mass market… But this could absolutely go either way. In the meantime, many of those on-demand services have begun investing in the power of radio. He adds, Despite the recent—and not so recent—proliferation of alternatives, rumors of radio’s decline have been greatly exaggerated. “It’s managed to hold its own,” says Mulligan. “You look at the reach of radio, the number of people listening to the radio, it’s absolutely held its own for a long period of time.” - READ COMPLETE STORY HERE

With the moves, they become the first full-time hosts to join the recently launched country outlet. "Our search has centered greatly on people with local connections, hit music experience and a love of country music. Hiring, Dayton Kane, a Milwaukee native, who's ready to come home and has been working just up the road, is a huge win for KTI Country" said WTMJ-AM and WKTI-FM VP/GM Tom Langmyer.

Joining for nights is Jillene Khan (L) who arrives from WLLR-FM/Quad Cities. She began her career in Minneapolis area. Kane and Khan will make their KTI Country debut on September 8.

Peoria Host Saved By CPR After Suffering Massive Heart Attack

7THE MOUTH, AUGUST 26TH, 2015 –– Markley (R), one half of The Robbins & Markley Show which airs on FM News 101 KXL Weekdays 2p-6p CST 1470 and 100.3 WMBD Peoria, IL, Robbins and Markey Show, posted on Facebook: 'As many times as we've joked on the show about Robbins worst fear of having "a grabber", please know this is no joke or prank or some sort of radio bit. (I wish it were) Scott suffered a massive heart attack early (Tuesday) morning. He went into cardiac arrest and was saved by CPR and needed 3 different shocks to bring him back. He was stabilized in the hospital and was coherent. I (along with his family) was able to talk with him several times throughout the day. An entire team of pros were working on him and brought him back. The staff here said it was pretty much a miracle he made it through last night.

In a morning update, Markley posted: 'After a scan today, the doctors were able to find where Scott's internal bleeding was originating from. They then performed a procedure (they had no choice) to stop the bleeding and the procedure was successful. (If Scott wants to share all of the particulars of that info I'll let him do that later.... Now we're waiting for his condition to steadily improve to go into open heart surgery. I gotta admit, this has been a very scary day. Thanks so much for your prayers and the comments - I can't wait to share all of this with him!

REPORT: 94.7 Fresh FM's Tommy McFly, The Future of Radio

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 26TH, 2015 –– We reported last week that the Washingtonian (extremely popular magazine in DC) featured CBS 94.7 Fresh FM's Tommy McFly in an article titled 'Tommy McFly' The Future of Radio.' Well, upon finding out at press time we had been given an advance peek and the article still wasn't live, Jockline was left with only a tease. Well, the piece is out, so check it out. Along with show members (and regular Morning Show Boot Camp attendees) Jen Richer (right center) and Kelly Collis (bottom right), writer Andrew Beaujon says "The Tommy Show crew wins its listeners one at a time. If that means deejays giving out their cell numbers to pretty much anyone who wants to connect, that’s fine. McFly’s retail approach seems to be working. The Tommy Show accounts for about a third of the station’s listeners, and more than 320,000 tune in each week.

“There’s no normal anymore,” McFly says about radio in the second decade of the 21st century. “There’s no punching the clock.” At work by 4:30 am, McFly—who lives with his partner, Chrysovalantis Kefalas, a candidate for US Senate in Maryland—is out most nights at “family” events. .. Collis is at Jiffy Lube Live, celebrating her wedding the previous day to Patrick Bauer, a government contractor. The festivities take place on the venue’s party decks, at the rear of the amphitheater. SPECIAL REPORT: Remembering Katrina 10-Years Later; Living At Station, Broadcasting From Under A Cabana

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 26TH, 2015 –– This week marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. For the occasion, Jockline will be sharing stories of how radio responded to one of our country's, most deadly and destructive storms. Among the many unforgettable memories comes from Wayne Watkins Program Director WQBB-FM/BOB 105.9 Alpha Media. Like many others along the gulf coast, he lost his home and began living at his station (The 105.9 WXRG control room, yes we were on the air!) where he broadcast under a tarp (above right)

Watkins tells Jockline, "New Orleans got a levee break, the Mississippi Gulf Coast got Katrina.' After losing his home (upper left photo of neighborhood) he eventually got a ride to the radio station to let everyone know he was fine, but said 'the only thing I owned was the soiled clothes on my back, full of diesel fuel and seaweed. I decided to live in the radio station lobby for a while, we needed security, the place had lost it’s roof and was totally water-logged. We got one studio live, and simulcasted post-Katrina from under a plastic homemade cabana!. READ FULL STORY HERE
