Houston Hosts Go Off-Script During Storm Air From Both Their Stations And Homes

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 29TH, 2017 –– KBME/Houston sports host Matt Thomas (TL) told The Houston Chronicle he had not seen his family since Friday while anchoring iHeartMedia's radio simulcast of Hurricane Harvey coverage on Monday. Thomas, like numerous 7other radio hosts in Houston have put regular programming on hold as they went into 24/7 coverage of Hurricane Harvey. CBS Radio and other local owners, unlike iHeart, has no news-talk presence, so their stations' hosts went into news-mode. "They want to hear each other's voices," Thomas said. "They want to know what areas are being affected, what is happening in other areas. As much as they want to hear from meteorologists and civic leaders, there is a part of them that wants to hear from fellow citizens on how they have been navigating these waters."

"Radio Is The Ultimate Connector," Says CBS/Houston's Sarah Frazier

CBS Radio cluster hosts from KILT (100.3 FM) and KHMX (96.5 FM) have joined for the simulcast. Sarah Frazier (BL), GM of CBS Houston, said the company went to a five-station simulcast at 4 p.m. Sunday, working from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and picking up the audio portion of 7Channel 2's newscasts during the evening. "Radio is the ultimate connector," she added. "We're connecting people to information and to the relief effort and to each other. Knowing which (grocery store) is open and which one has water is very important information."

KRBE/Houston's Eric Rowe, executive producer of The Roula and Ryan Show, tells Jockline, "We are a Cumulus standalone in Houston and while we don't have sister stations to help out, we are so lucky to have Cumulus to give us any and all resources that are needed. Our KRBE team has been working nonstop since Friday on air and behind the scenes. Roula (BR), Afternoon Host Kevin Quinn (TL), Special K (TR), Midday Host Freddy Cruise, Night Host Tyler Frye, Phoenix, our traffic reporter Tiffany, and our weekend warriors such as Corinna (BL) are all doing nonstop coverage in the studio. The rest of us (Ryan, OM/Leslie Whittle and Rowe) are trapped in our homes. We’re all working hard coordinating guests, and coming up with a plan every day since Harvey is so unpredictable. Right now Houstonians are feeling scared and they want to get information. We want to help them by giving them the right information, and making them feel safe and protected. We're all in this together and it’s great to see so many people working for one goal and that’s to help each other.

Q104's Jim Kerr & Shelli Sonstein Celebrate 40 Years On New York Radio

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 29TH, 2017 –– August 29, 1977 marks a day in radio history when Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein emerged as 7what would become the top rated morning show in New York City, The Jim Kerr Rock and Roll Morning Show. Kerr has been on-air for 50 years, where his career began at age 21 as the morning show host at WPLJ, a position he held for 15 years until Sonstein showed up and surprised Kerr at WPLJ studios as his new co-host, being only 23 years old. Kerr had no idea this young woman from Atlanta; Georgia would be his co-host for the next 40 years. “I saw this woman and I didn’t know what she was doing there. No one told me who she was and why she was there” Kerr said.

Sonstein and Kerr plan to keep their morning show rocking. “When people ask Jim and me when we plan to retire, we both respond the same way, “why would we ever want to stop doing what we love?” says Sonstein. Q104.3 Program Director, Eric Wellman is amazed at their chemistry after being on the air for four decades together. “That Jim and Shelli could be together for 40 years and still be as connected and vibrant today as they were in 1977 is amazing! It is a privilege and an honor to work with this team every day (and producer “Grumpy” Joe Cristiano too who’s been with them for “only” 14 years). They make me look good daily and make my job so easy. Q104.3 is lucky to have them and so is New York. Here’s to another 40!” Wellman says. Kerr and Sonstein can be heard weekdays on iHeartMedia’s Q104.3 New York’s Classic Rock from 5am – 9am.

Flood-Stricken Texans Turn To Media For Rescue And Aid As More Rain Predicted

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 28TH, 2017 –– As numerous people in Houston and surrounding areas are still being rescued from rooftops and flooded homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, many turned to radio, TV, and social media for help. The Daily Mail reports the storm has already dumped a historic 11 trillion gallons of water on Texas - with another another 23 inches expected to come within the next few days.

7As usual, radio is doing its part in working around the clock with coverage and aid. HeartMedia's broadcast radio, digital and billboards helped inform its listeners in the Corpus Christi, Houston and Austin areas over the weekend. In Corpus Christi, all stations are simulcasting News Radio 740 KTRH/Houston. K99 Country, Big 93.9 and Tejano 99.9 are broadcasting in English and Spanish to address the needs of the both communities. In Houston, iHeartMedia's local staff has been broadcasting in long form nonstop since 8 AM on Friday, as well as reporting on Facebook Live to provide local listeners with up-to-date information and emergency resources. Though the region lost a station's vehicle, multiple employees' homes are affected, and KPRC-FM's transmitter is down due to water damage, iHeartMedia continues to broadcast from our five remaining stations (Sunny 99.1, 94.5 The Buzz, 93.7 The Beat, KTRH News Radio 740, and Sports Talk 790 AM)

Salem Media Group has also mobilized its platforms nationwide to rush life-saving aid to children and families impacted by the strongest hurricane to hit Texas in 50 years. Salem’s twin 24/7 national news networks—SRN News and TOWNHALL News—Friday evening began round-the-clock appeals for donations for non-profit relief organization SAVE THE CHILDREN, already on the ground in Texas and Louisiana.

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 28TH, 2017 –– The Red Cross have already set up a way to donate to victims with a simple text reports ABC News' Tom Llamas (inset). Simply text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. You can also visit redcross.org or call 1- 800-RED CROSS. Study Finds On-Demand Listening Skews More Female And Younger Than AM/FM

7

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 28TH, 2017 – On-demand audio -- portions of AM/FM shows that are repurposed for post consumption via online platforms -- are growing in popularity, but the question is, who’s listening? Westwood One collaborated with Nielsen on a custom study using the Nielsen Total Audience measurement framework to measure the audiences for local on-demand content from the Cumulus Media owned-and-operated stations, as well as national on-demand content from Westwood One shows. The findings were surprising.

7“It’s hard to believe, but this is the first ever study of the demographic profile of on-demand radio content,” said Suzanne Grimes, EVP, Corporate Marketing, Cumulus Media and President, Westwood One. “Our biggest learning is that on-demand content skews more female than AM/FM radio content across all genres. This is an incredible insight for brands and content creators, as it opens up new opportunities to connect with women.”

Nielsen provided demographic estimates for Westwood One on-demand audio content consumed on their properties leveraging their Nielsen Total Audience measurement framework. Seventy-five on-demand programs over three genres – News/Talk, Sports, and Entertainment --were examined and measured via listening on the audioBoom content platform. The on-demand content originally aired on Cumulus Media radio stations or via Westwood One’s nationwide radio network. Programs included Westwood One’s The Mark Levin Show, NBC Sports Radio’s Pro Football Talk Live with Mike Florio, WNNX/Atlanta’s Bailey and Southside, KRBE/Houston’s The Roula & Ryan Show, KABC/Los Angeles’ Dr. Drew Midday Live, and more. GOLDSTEIN: Top Takeaways From Podcast Movement

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 28TH, 2017 –– Amplifi Media's Steve Goldstein says, "Three years ago there were seven people from the radio business at Podcast Movement. That's not hyperbole. Along with public radio and hobbyists, there were only seven radio people. I was one of them. Three years later, it looks a lot different. A significant contingent from the radio business was at last week's conference, including several radio group heads. That says a lot about the rapid ascension of podcasting in general, and broadcasting specifically." As for the rest of the crowd, Goldstein says, "Sure, it's a YouTube video-centric generation, but most of Podcast Movement's 2,000 attendees are younger than a typical radio gathering and energized about audio storytelling and conversation.

The “Broadcaster Meets Podcaster” track assembled by Jacobs Media was packed. Seeing some radio group heads on hand was encouraging. It finally feels as though there is some traction, but commercial radio has a great deal of catching up to do. Among the top takeaways, included:

There is energy in new content ideas – The hallmark of podcasting is the innovative content and fresh ideas that come from fertile minds not bound by linear thinking and structure. -- Public Radio’s leadership is unmistakable – They continue to lead in content, sales and thinking. -- Teach – There is an openness and collegiality of sharing. -- Content creators are data-starved – It’s hard operating in the blind. At previous Podcast Movement conferences, there was little data to share or inform. This year Larry Rosin and Tom Webster of Edison Research headlined a keynote with well received podcast data. Goldstein adds, The Podcast Movement was once again inspiring and exhilarating. As Alex Blumberg said at last year's conference, "it's the second golden age of audio." It sure feels that way," says Goldstein.
