IN THE MOUTH: Things That May No Longer Work On The Radio

By Dave Ryan

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2012 –– In the current issue of The Mouth, iconic Minneapolis radio diety, Dave Ryan, who pens 'Time & Temp' in each month's Morning Mouth, weighs in on things that may no longer work on the radio. In the first of three-part feature in Jockline Daily, he touches on the role of 'stunt boys.' Dave writes: "A couple months ago, I wrote an article for this fine publication about the things in radio that just don't really ever change. We talked about how there's at least one male whore on every air staff. (Usually the night guy) I mentioned how engineers tend to be some of the oddest people in the building. And how there's one person on every staff that you aren't quite sure exactly what they do. These are constants in the radio business." Later, at the urging of a friend, he decided to make a list of what he thought no longer works on the radio: "Stunt boys: Years ago, everyone had a "Goat Boy" who went out and got attacked by a police dog or went cliff-diving ... all for giggles. We don't do that anymore, because I really think it belongs to another era of radio. Today, listeners want to hear the star of the show ride a bull, get hit by a stun gun or have a finger cut off. Even the idea of saying, "Here's Xtreme Jamie out on the street, ready to get dragged behind a car" makes me cringe a little. It was incredibly fun radio back then, but just like Tom Green, it's time has passed," writes Dave. Tomorrow, in Pt. 2, he addresses 'Endless Entertainment Reports & Double Time Checks.'

Dahl's Podcast Hits The One Year Mark

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2012 –– Seems just like yesterday that Chicago radio legend, Steve Dahl, was teasing on Twitter about about a major announcement, this just after the expiration of his contract with CBS. As it turned, just over a year ago, he chose not to return to terrestrial radio and op'd instead to turn his podcast into a paid mode. Now, according to I4News, one year later, he's making some money and challenging critics. From his basement, he hosts 90-minute shows for several thousand subscribers paying $9.95 per month to download his daily offerings. "I'm doing a lot better than most people thought I would do," he tells I4News. "A lot of people said it was going to fail, and in fact, it's already making money in its first year." Dahl first began podcasting in 2009. At the time, I4News reports he was getting appx. 20,000 downloads per show, which Dahl says \represented about 5,000 different users. Dahl admitted his subscription base has grown more slowly than he initially envisioned, but he remains committed to the pay model. Dahl has three full-time employees, co-hosts Dag Juhlin and Brendan Greeley and operations director Erica Drogoszewski. In December, he added former colleague Kevin Matthews to the network. Other contributors include former Q101 host James VanOsdol, comedy writer Dino Stamatopoulos and Dahl's son, Matt.

FRED JACOBS: "Use Photos To Enhance Your Radio Show"

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2012 –– Jacobs Media's Fred Jacobs has long been a proponent of video as a means of expanding radio's reach. Now you can add 'Photos' to his list. In his recent blog "I Saw It On The Radio," he wrote: "Maybe it’s a chicken-egg thing between Instagram and Facebook. Instagram was already growing quickly when Facebook acquired it. But now an Android & iPhone app, lots of buzz, and Instagram now sits at 80 million users – and growing. In just the last 13 weeks, Instagram has witnessed a 60% increase in those using its platform. To date, 4 billion photos have been shared on Instagram." But he adds, forget the stats and think about ways to use photos to enhance your own listeners' experience. Stations and jocks can distinguish themselves and connect with users in ways that pure-plays simply cannot. As stations all over America are posting condolences and heartfelt sympathy, these similar messages become blurred. That is, until someone comes along with a poignant picture that is truly worth 10,000 words. Enter WRIF’s Anne Carlini who said more with this photo (shown) and nine words than anyone else we saw in the radio community – on Facebook, on Twitter, or on the air. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

GaGa then invited Elvis to a birthday dinner at her dad’s new restaurant, Joanne’s Trattoria in New York City. BILL PRESS: "..I’m Endlessly Fascinated With How Interested People Are In The Behind-The-Scenes Of A Radio Show.”

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2012 –– Nice piece in Media Bistro's Fishbowl section on Dial Global's syndicated Stephanie Miller and Bill Press. As you first read here in Jockline Daily back in March, their radio shows began simulcasting on Current TV. A move many called prescient. Press says, however, it was really Don Imus who first caught his attention on his days back MSNBC. After stints with KABC, KFI and KCOP, then hosting 'Crossfire' on CNN and later mornings in D.C., Press tells Fishbowl “That’s when I picked up on Imus, and as a radio talk show host,” he says “I thought, ‘This is really cool, they put it on television… Why not?’” He adds, “I’ve had my nationally syndicated radio show for five years, but being on Current takes it to a whole new level,” As for Miller, she says “ “I remember, once, a television executive said to me after a late night show – this was years ago – she said, ‘God, we should have just televised your radio show.’ She said. ‘We took everything we loved about you and over-produced it.” READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

MOVERS/WAKERS: Howie Carr Contract Extended - He's Disappointed; Dave And Jimmy Invade England; Melissa McConnell Joins KJOY Sacramento

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2012 –– Following a statement from WRKO citing Howie Carr's contract has been extended, he tells The Boston Herald, “I’m very disappointed. I was hoping I’d get parole. But there’s only two years left on my bit and I now know the exact day I’m leaving. I can do this standing on my head.” You may recall that two years ago, Carr filed complaints against WRKO seeking unpaid bonuses and a pay raise following his unsuccessful attempt to defect to rival WTKK. --------- Syndicated mornings (and WNCI semi-legends) Dave & Jimmy (Jimmy and co-host Kelsey shown) are in London for their "coverage" of the Summer Games. And by "coverage", they tell Jockline Daily "they mean comedy from drunks, fantastic accents and attempting to actually drive cars on English streets (which is impossible). NBC paid a lot of money to show you the games; Dave & Jimmy paid a lot less. Previous trips included Vancouver, Greece, Salt Lake, Australia and Japan. Dave & Jimmy are syndicated through USRN. -------- Cumulus Media Stockton's 99.3 KJOY FM has tagged Melissa McConnell for evenings, transitioning from her 2 years as weekend personality at sister station KAT Country 103 (KATM) FM. She told Jockline Daily: "Good thing I love ALL music, which has allowed me to switch back and forth seamlessly between the two formats [and then some] throughout my Northern CA Radio career."

Jack Diamond Pays Tribute To Passing Of Tom "Cat" Reeder

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2012 –– Tom "Cat" Reeder (shown center) passed away on June 30th. Mix 107.3's Jack Diamond (shown L) says "You may ask "who?" Give me a sec and I'll tell you. But know he was so important to me, I have been in denial for a month, and honestly didn't want to admit or talk about it. It is always hard to share bad news," says Diamond. "I would never have had a radio career without Tom "Cat" Reeder. He did a Morning Radio Show on WDON in Wheaton, Maryland when I was just a kid. Maybe 10 years old. The station was on Georgia Avenue a couple doors down from Dunkin' Donuts. It was there during Christmas that its owner, Everett Dillard introduced Jack to Tom "Cat" Reeder, who not only allowed me to sit in on his show that Saturday morning, but EVERY Saturday Morning for YEARS. My close friend Rick Fowler (shown R) and I had a chance to take Tom to lunch earlier this year ... I also had a chance to say "Thank You" to the man who encouraged me and ignited my passion for radio. Tom "Cat" ended his show every day by saying " I hope you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live. ... Bye-bye, Tom "Cat."

97.1 The Fan/Columbus Scoop Interview With The President; Talk Sports, Not Politics [VIDEO]

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 3RD, 2012 –– Mike Ricordati and Scott Torgerson (shown), better known as Common Man & The Torg, snagged a rare call yesterday from President Barack Obama. Known affectionately by their fans as "my guys," when welcoming the President to the show, Obama asked "Is this my guys?" Impressed with his research, they then went on to discuss his beloved Chicago White Sox, Ohio State Football, the Olympics and the recent sanctions against Penn State. In fact, for nearly 8 minutes, that's all they talked about was sports. “We’re going to have negative feedback no matter what,” Ricordati told The Columbus Dispatch before the Obama interview, referring to the sensitive nature of politics and the role Ohio will play in the Fall election. As for the Penn St. sanctions, Obama was asked whether the penalties “fits the crime. “I think it does,” Obama said. “I’ve been a big admirer of Penn State football ... but there are some things that are more important than sports. Making sure our kids are safe is more important than sports.” WATCH INTERVIEW HERE 1

Congresswoman's Office Slams Phone On Host Following Chick-Fil-A Stunt [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 3RD, 2012 –– As Jockline reported yesterday, WFTL/Miami's Rich Stevens, much like numerous other hosts, joined the Chick-Fil-A appreciation day follies with a bit of stuntage, but his came at the expense of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. After learning that she wouldn't let her three kids eat there, Stevens then urged listeners to mail their empty Chick-Fil-A wrappers to one of two addresses he gave out on the air. As if that weren't enough, he decided to give her office a call to make nice. Apparently, the lady who answered the phone was not only well aware of the prankage, but likely the recipient of a pile of chicken wrappers. After calling into the Congresswoman's office, he introduced himself and asked "I'm just calling to ask if you have any empty Chick-Fil-A wrappers?' After a short pause, you then hear the sound of phone being slammed down. Just a guess, but there may have been some choice words mubbled as well. We now look forward to how hosts like Rich will handle today's same se(x) protest kissathon planned. Stay tuned. [LISTEN TO AUDIO]

Stars as a radio personality loosely based on his own life

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 3RD, 2012 –– The syndicated Rickey Smiley is currently playing in a role he's quite familiar with. No, not his radio show, but his soon to be released new TV One TV show, "The Rickey Smiley Show." Now being filmed in Atlanta, he stars as a radio personality character loosely based on his own life; local jock based in Atlanta, who's a single father to three children. According to tvbroadwayworld.com, "the show's stories are derived from Rickey's attempt to raise his children by himself and still have a personal life, as well as from situations that arise at the radio station, which is a hot bed of office politics, back stabbing, (s)exual innuendo, social issues, celebrity appearances, music and, of course, humor." The series is produced for TV One by Bobbcat Films. Executive producers are Roger Bobb, Rickey Smiley, Yolanda Starkes-White and Ward White. Executive in Charge of Production for TV One is Tia Smith. "The Rickey Smiley Show is a great development for TV One as we expand further into scripted programming," said TV One President and CEO Wonya Lucas.
