Michael Savage To Take Over Hannity's Slot On Cumulus

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2013 –– Calling it "The biggest shake-up in talk radio history," Michael Savage, opened his show last night by revealing he will take over the prime afternoon-drive slot on Cumulus Media Networks stations in January. The 3 to 6 p.m. et. slot is currently held by Sean Hannity, who recently ended his relationship with the network. “The time slot says that something about my show has resonated with the American people,” Savage said. Back in August, Savage teased: “I’m reading the tea leaves,” he said. “I’m watching the shifting sands. I am the heir apparent. This will be the biggest shakeup in talk-radio history, should my Mprediction come true.” On last night's show he read from a Cumulus Media Memo announcing his move. He then posted a banner on his website Savage said he expects immediately to have "five to six times as many listeners, as he does now." In the transition, Savage will soon air in New York (WABC), Chicago (WLS), Dallas (WBAP), Washington (WMAL), San Francisco (KSFO) and WJR (Detroit) among many others.

$100 Bills Planted In Radio Stunt Triggers National Coverage

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2013 –– Several shoppers this week in Salem, OR. were surprised to find $100 bills turning up in store items such as egg cartons and cookie boxes. One man even returned the money, but was told to keep it being told it was likely from a good samaritan. Yesterday, Alpha's 98.7 the Bull confirmed it was part of its "Cash Cow" promotion. According to KGW TV, one of the winners told them “My girlfriend is in the hospital with renal failure ... I'm driving to MOHSU (in Portland) every day. So 20 bucks in gas each way, it comes at a very opportune time for me.” Jennifer Smith-Poelz was another winner. She said “I just think this is the coolest thing ever,” she said. “Whoever is doing this has brightened so many people's days. I wish I had ample amounts of cash to be able to surprise people like this. I mean, it's fabulous.” Reportedly, there were seven $100 bill placed in store items, but it looks like the bigger payoff for the station was the national publicity. By yesterday, local and regional TV stations, plus national websites such as Huffpo had picked up on the story. Look for more coverage today. WATCH VIDEO HERE

Media Watchdog Groups Challenge KDND Sacramento's License

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2013 –– Two Sacramento media watchdog groups said Wednesday they will challenge the broadcast license renewal of KDND/107.9 "The End" held responsible in the water intoxication death of Jennifer Strange in its 2007 "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" Contest. According to The Merced Sun Star, On Wednesday, representatives for the Sacramento Media Group and the Media Action Center announced thMat they intend to file legal challenges with the FCC before the Nov. 1 deadline to contest the station’s pending eight-year broadcast license renewal. Media Action Center founder Sue Wilson (left), producer of a 2009 documentary, “Broadcast Blues,” that spotlighted Strange’s death, said the groups intend to formally serve papers challenging KDND’s license renewal when FCC commissioners meet in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 22. In a news conference, Wilson said although a jury had held the station liable for Strange’s death, the FCC has shown no inclination to go after its broadcast license. Kevin Geary, a spokesman for KDND’s parent corporation, Entercom Communications Corp., said Wednesday that “the events in 2007 were tragic. Our thoughts remain with the family. We will respond to any petition filed with the FCC at the appropriate time.” In 2009, a jury found Entercom Sacramento negligent in the case and awarded $16,577,188, but exonerated the parent corporation, Entercom Communications Corp., of any liability.

Radios' Dr. Drew Reveals Cancer Battle On Dr. Oz [VIDEO]

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2013 ––
Radio host Dr. Drew's own health issues became the topic on yesterday's The Dr. Oz Show as he revealed his battle with cancer. He told Oz "I have cancer. How about that? And it's funny when I saw you walking out, I thought, ‘wow, it's going to be emotional for me to say this’. Thank God, I have something that is curable. It's called prostate cancer and it is one of the most common cancers out there. A lot of men out there are suffering with this thing." Dr. Drew then offered his advice to viewers on dealing with the diagnosis. "I guess I took a page from what I tell other people," said Pinsky, "which is you rely on important people close to you, and you get good help, and you don't steep yourself in denial, and you feel the feelings, and they're not so fun. They're not fun. I remember, I think the worst of it for me; strangely, I was on a trip with my family. And when they were telling me the PSA wasn't going down when I was being treated for prostatitis, you just, you get this sinking feeling. It's one of the worst feelings you can have and it's very lonely, very alone. And that's the time to reach out." WATCH VIDEO

GOOD NEWS: Radio An Important Part Of Listener's Lives

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2013 –– Researcher Mark Kassof & Co. has released its ListenerThink P1 research study based on 989 online interviews with 18-64 U.S. radio listeners. Its focus was to explore the role of radio in listeners’ lives from many angles — one of them, radio’s importance. Yesterday, with a bit of bad news first, they revealed that 53% of this group didn't think that radio was as good now as it used to be. They promised with that release that good news would follow and sure enough came the news of radios' real importance in listener's lives. When asked "If you couldn’t listen to radio, you’d feel something important was missing from your life, respondents answered: AGREE STRONGLY 34% --- AGREE SLIGHTLY 36% --- DISAGREE SLIGHTLY 17% --- DISAGREE STRONGLY 10% --- DON'T KNOW 3%. Kassof says the bottomline is that more than two-thirds agree that radio is an important part of their lives. And we see only small differences between demographic groups… 35-44′s and (especially) 45-54′s would miss radio most if it was gone; 18-24′s would miss it least. But even among 18-24′s, the majority (58%) agree that something important would be missing without radio. (Among 35-54′s, three-fourths agree.)

West said creative black people were only allowed their "best perspective on T-shirts. But if it's anything else, your Truman Show boat is hitting the wall." West was especially critical of the fashion industry, which he said Mhad put up obstacles to his involvement, despite his assertion he now spends 80% of his time working on fashion and only 20% working on music. West accepted he would always be a divisive figure – "I think there are people who are wired by their parents to understand what I'm saying and I think there are people who are wired by their parents to reject what I'm saying" – but he said no matter what people thought of him, he would be remembered. STUDY: 53% Say Radio Not As Good As It Once Was

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2013 –– Michigan based Mark Kassof & Co. has just released this year's 'LlstenerThink P1 Research which explored the role of radio in listeners’ lives along with its importance and benefits of listening. First, the bad news: Based on 989 online interviews with 18-64 U.S. radio listeners, conducted September 12-15, more than half agree: Radio isn’t as good as it used to be. This is especially true for 18-34 yr. olds.

• AGREE STRONGLY 19% • AGREE SLIGHTLY 34% • DISAGREE SLIGHTLY 28% • DISAGREE STRONGLY 13% • Don’t know 6%

Kassof says from a demographic perspective, 18-34′s are most negative — 61% agree, while only 31% disagree (and just 9% disagree strongly). What’s interesting is the oldest of them were only teens when The Telecommunication Act of 1996 became law…law that enabled “mega groups” that many blame for the decline of radio. Men are, overall, more negative than women, and 18-34 men the most negative — 67% of them agree that radio is not as good as it used to be, while only 28% disagree. In contrast, 45-54′s — both women and men – are the most supportive of radio on this question…45% agree, 50% disagree. But that’s far from an enthusiastic defense of the radio’s direction! But wait, Mark will shed some good news tomorrow. WHAT DO YOU THINK? CLICK COMMENT BELOW

THE TENNESSEAN: Bobby Bones Show A Force To Be Reckoned With

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2013 –– For those wondering how former CHR host Bobby Bones is doing just months after his well publicized switch to a national country platform, apparently The Tennessean now thinks he's a force to be reckoned with. So much so that his quick acceptance in Nashville prompted a front page story (see above) in yesterday's post (later picked up by USA Today). "Bobby Bones is not ashamed to admit that he’s not a cowboy, and he doesn’t own a belt buckle," say writer Nate Rau. He describes the show featuring co-hosts Amy (Brown) and Lunchbox (Dan Chappell), as Msounding a lot like a group of friends sitting on the patio at Jackson’s Bar and Bistro in Hillsboro Village talking about whatever comes to mind. Rau adds: "Despite his different take on country and unconventional formula, Bones stands on the brink of becoming the new voice of country music radio. According to Arbitron, when the Bone's show entered the market in March, it debuted in third place in 25-54 behind his key rivals. By June, Bones’ show had taken over first place, and continued to extend its lead through August. “Most people my age, quite honestly, are going to associate WSIX with Gerry House,” said Rich Tiner, professor of media studies at Belmont University. “And they’ve never quite been able to move past that to the next big thing." Bones and his co-hosts, Amy (r-center) and Lunchbox (l-center), also host a Top 30 countdown show on the weekend, and he co-hosts a sports show for FoxSports with retired tennis star Andy Roddick. STUDY: Internet Radio Now Listened To By 53% Of Users

“The advent of mobile listening, and the proliferation of choices for the types of Internet audio have transformed the medium from niche activity to major media channel in under ten years." Larry Rosin

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2013 –– Sounds like the drumbeat Internet radio may be growing louder. In a recent study from Edison Research commissioned by several leading Internet companies, data showed more than half of Americans who go online listen to Internet radio services with an indication the industry is becoming more mainstream. From a field of 3,000 people age 12 and up, the study found that 53% of web users listen to Internet radio outlets, including personalized streaming, live online audio and music on-demand. The study, entitled The New Mainstream: 2013, was originally presented at a special event collocated with Advertising Week in New York City on September 24th, where Edison’s President, Larry Rosin, unveiled the results of the study and moderated a panel of executives from all three Streaming Audio Task Force participants. Among the other key findings included:

• Internet radio is the third most popular way that people discover new music, ahead of Amazon, YouTube, Social Media and other sources. • 63% of Internet radio listeners own a smartphone–and 83% of smartphone Mowners listen to some kind of Internet radio on their mobile devices. • 32% of Internet radio listeners indicated that they are listening to “a lot” more of the medium than they were one year ago.
